Default Crab Pots - How Much Rope @ Twin Rocks

I'm hoping to get any recommendations on rope length for dropping crab pots near Twin Rocks.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I have 60' of rope on mine. I usually drop them in 40-45' on the south side of tbay. It looks like people crab into about 30' but I've seen breakers that far in. The NW swell builds up worse on the north side (I think because of the Jetty) so I crab south. Good luck. HJ

Thanks HowgJaw! I've seen commercial pots out in the deeper water south of the jetties. How is the crabbing going as of late?

I'm running 60' of rope, but I was concerned that it may not be enough.

I have heard of people talking about dropping their pots off at Twin Rocks before chasing silvers or nooks...I figured that the rocks were the "go to" place for picking up some good keeper crab. Don't like the thought of breakers on the north side...so perhaps we'll go south. How far south are you going?

The way the ocean has been, I may want a few thousand feet, so I can run out in the morning and drop my pots, and pull the pot from shore when the ocean gets nasty in the afternoon.

I usually use about 60 feet of rope as well by the way.

I usually go about 1/4 to 1/2 mile south. There is a lot of sediment if they are too close. HJ

As a general rule always reserve a quarter of my rope in reserve. I have 125 feet of rope and never drop in more than 90 feet.

Thanks for the pointers! Look forward to seeing you out there. I'll be the beefy guy in the black duckworth with black anchor mounted on the bow.

RL,
You might want to make sure you have plenty of weight in your traps. I put out 2 Brand new traps a couple years back by twin rocks. Went out for silvers and came back to find nothing. I Had 60 feet of rope and my Traps were the Danielsons folding type. I am pretty sure it was because of the tide and current, but, Most of all not having the Extra weight so they wouldn't be pulled down and out. I now use about 5 to 7 lbs. of Rebartiewrapped to the bottoms. Tight Lines,Tom

Two important things weight in Ocean pots and enough line.. Not to mention your floats. If they're too buoyant, they will "walk your pots across the ocean floor. I have SCUBA dove all around twin rocks, nothing there except tidal animials. You would be pushin 45 to 50 feet around there. I would recommend 60 to 75 feet of line
