Re: 2008 blacktails......
I like to switch it up every other year between rifle and bow. You guys may not agree but I think those with a rifle tag have the advantage of the rut. The late bow season is on the downhill side of the rut. Don't get me wrong, bowhunting is my passion but a rifle in my hands feels pretty darn good every once in awhile for deer. For elk though, it will always be stick and string.

Re: 2008 blacktails......
I'm lucky enough to have a willamette tag so I'll be out with the stick & string tomorrow. The rut seems early this year. It may be on the downhill side of the rut by the 22.
There sure are some big ones coming out of the woods this year.

My Willy tag and I will keep looking for mine. Been out everyday this week, but only a couple of small bucks have been seen.

Re: 2008 blacktails......
congratulations to all those who took blacktails this year. some real trophys and any blacktail is a trophy.... maybe the eastside isn't all it is cracked up to be.

Re: 2008 blacktails......
I am with Ahmanee, I love to bow hunt, last year I got a pope and young (barely) blacktail right after thanksgiving, but this year I carried a rifle in search of deer. Now that season is over and I still have an empty tag, well of course I am kicking myself.
I also agree that stick flinging is the only way to go after the elk, at least over here in the west. So far this year I didn't get a shot opportunity at an elk, and that is a first for me.

Re: 2008 blacktails......
I was on another site, and there is a pic of a ABSOLUTE MONSTER BLACKTAIL, killed in Linn Co. this year (I think). It is freakishly huge. It has it all....mass, width, and heighth. Next year baby.....no more east for me....it's all about the blactail for me.

Re: 2008 blacktails......
Up the Clack has been pretty slow for rut activity, so rut might be better timed for you guys with the sticks. Very strange year up there this year. I got 2 really good go to places, nothing rubbed at all. I've been up there for 6 days, seen a small fork doing a fly by on the road thats it. I wonder if all the rigs going uphill after dark has anything to do with it, na couldnt be.
