New to Ifish.
I thought it might be appropriate to post here as the sea is where I do most my fishing. I was born in Oregon and grew up fishing in Oregon until I was 16. Then I started commercially crabbing in Alaska in the Bering Sea and working on salmon trollers and seiners and currently I am running a 90 foot longliner off the east coast. I have been a skipper since age 20 and have several tales to tell from the sea. I will drop in as often as possible to catch up on the goings on back in Oregon. So far it has been a very busy fishing season and we have had some good days. Looks like I'll be commercial crabbing out of Alaska or I may be offshore from Oregon and washington this year. If I get back it would be nice to take a break and go fishing on a river for salmon or steelies. How is the tuna fishing going out there. Probably pretty good I can remember some good albacore trips. Well look forward to visiting with you all when I can.

Swordfish, you say? Welcome to our little world, longliner!
Do tell us more about swordfish, won't you? (evil grin with finger tips tapping greedily against one another)

Re: New to Ifish.
Well I can tell this is going to be a great site. It has been a long day turning the boat around. Met the crew at 7 this morning and we started loading all the food and bait for our next trip out. Just finished a short time ago and hopefully everything is in order. Tomarrow we load all the new tackle, fuel, fresh water, and do a saftey check, new batteries in all the bouys, etc. Looks like we will get three more trips out this season. We leave the dock at 6 on the 3rd of Aug and hopefully are back around the end of the mounth to turn around again, timing is everything we want to be out there around the full moon phase of the mount, that is when it is best. So late October will wrap up the season, then we gear up for halibut this winter and I also get ready for Alaska this winter running a crabber for a friend.
Thank you for the warm welcome and I will write as often as time allows. We have a computer on board that we keep in contact with land base about our catch andany problems, so I may sneak in a few lines once in a while..... while steaming to our next set or steaming for our haulback. Got to go.

Re: New to Ifish.
Ocean blue - yes swordfish, but we are not currently swordfishing. It is pretty much colsed due to overfishing, now we are more species specific with are catch. We do go out occasionally for swordfish but it is further south where regulations are different and it's more or less for sport. It all changed in 2002, so the fishery that was showin in the movie "Prefect Storm" is now non existent. To bad that was a lot of fun in 1990's era. Now commercial fishing here is tightly regulated and it is difficult to get the permits and keep up with all the changes, we fish much closer than the Grand Banks usually and return back to port much quicker. Fishing is good but changing between species is expensive. Right now is slammin time for Atlantic salmon and atlantic herring with cod, flounder, and white Hake making good trips. Blue fin tuna has been slower this season but the pollock catch is helping. Sorry to let you down about the swordfish ( I was thinking back to the good days). I do have some good stories from back than that I will share.
