Default Greetings from a S.D. wannabe, plus story

Good morning. I've been reading and learning much from this crew for a number of months after another Salty One Peter Mac directed me to the site. I hope to meet and fish with some of you in the future. My story:

I am the proud owner of a new Willie Asaltor picked up last week. This is my first boat made for ocean fishing and I am eager to learn. I have fished the ocean for many years as a passenger, but again this is my first as a captain. I have great respect for the big blue and am always cautious. I have good safety equipment, GPS, and two radios. 175 merc 2 stroke and 9.9 4 stroke kicker. I feel the boat is well equipped.

Spent a day breaking in the engines on the Nehalem Friday and fished the ocean Saturday for the first time. Great day and great fishing. Converted almost immediately with three natives and even converted a double. Came in with one short of a limit in three hours of fishing, my opinion a great day.

Sunday was a different story, we launched in Garibaldi at 5:30 and made our way to the bar. Noticed the breeze and a few boats coming in so figured it would be interesting crossing. IT WAS. A bit rough getting out, but the boat was made to handle it and we were fine. However, like many others, found the ocean little too snotty for my tastes and returned in. I was priveleged to have passengers with many years of experience to help me this day and learned a great deal about how to handle the boat in rough water.

Looks like the ocean will be pretty nasty this weekend so looks like I'll try my luck in Nehalem. Anyhow, I look forward to meeting some of you in the future. I fully believe in strength in numbers out there, and would be happy to take some along if I have an open seat. I have a small house in Rockaway and plan on fishing any chance I get. If you see a black Asaltor its probably me. I monitor ch 78.

Hope to see some of you out there.......

Welcome Conn! The ocean is such a wonderful playground, but can be very unforgiving. Be careful out there!

Conn, I hope you have the time of your life running with the Salty Dogs.

I'd like to be one too, but I kept lacerating my esophagus with my toenails whenever I went out 30 years ago. Thus, I am doomed to forever remain a Puker Pup lurking in the bays and looking longingly at the bar.
