A Heads up for Newport Fri. !!!
FRI
N WIND 15 KT...RISING TO 20 KT IN THE AFTERNOON. WIND
WAVES 3 FT. NW SWELL 5 FT...BECOMING S 4 FT.
FYI
For those of you that don't know what can happen when a NW swell turns S in the afternoon, with a N wind, it can get rather sloppy! I call it the "Maytag Effect" Be careful out there guys!

Re: A Heads up for Newport Fri. !!!
Fishmstr...The Sat forecast (and again, I emphasize, FORECAST) calls for a W swell, which is much different, and not changing mid-day. I'm not trying to act as an advisor, just an FYI to make sure everyone is aware of the POSSIBLE conditions out there, and is safe

Re: A Heads up for Newport Fri. !!!
Oh, that's good. I miss read it. Hey, when fishing out of Depoe Bay, do you guys go by the Cascade head to Florence Forecast or the Cape Shoalwater to Cascade Head? Being an optomist, I tend to lean toward the upper coast forecast, for the S coast forecast always seems worse. Plus, I've seen it nice in Depoe when it was snotty in Newport...although the reverse is true too. Just curious since it is right on the line.
thnks,
steve

Re: A Heads up for Newport Fri. !!!
Popeye, is this the same scenario as the Saturday a few weeks back?
I was already at the coast and did not see the actual forecast.

Re: A Heads up for Newport Fri. !!!
No John....This is different. What we had was a S wind pushing against a N swell. That is MUCH worse than this is, however, this scenario will cause the ocean to "cup" from different directions. The result "can" cause a lot of slap port and starboard, especially if you are traveling E or W. Again, I'm definately not trying to be advisor, just something to watch for ie: Head for the beach at the first signs?

John, can we "pin" this to the top for the next day or so?
Thanks

Re: A Heads up for Newport Fri. !!!
The wind came up again last night from the north. Gusts to 20mph and still some fog this morning at Newport. 46050 had gusts to 21 and up to a 9' swell last night. Presently gusting to 13.6 with an 8' swell.
I will check the bouy early in the morning to make my decision. I will go to work if the conditions stay as is....don't need a fish that
bad.
Lets hope that it lays down!
Thanks for the heads up Popeye, this is a very good and smart post.

Re: A Heads up for Newport Fri. !!!
Hey Fshmstr Steve, that line between the two regions is completely arbitrary. You really have to use multiple sources of information to see what the big picture is, like where are the high & low pressure centers, and which way are they moving. The following gives you a good "zoomed out" view of the sea state:
sea state analysis
The numbers for the contour lines show the combined sea height. The yellow arrows show the wind direction.
Spend some time looking through the forecast products on the left sidebar.

Awesome...thanks for the link. I had not found that one before. I'll add it to my list of "crystal ball" of forecasts!!! This looks like a good one.

Re: A Heads up for Newport Fri. !!!
Popeye thanks for the heads up. There are some of us who dont spent a lot time at sea. I would rather hear a warning so that I will be aware of bad conditions before I am stuck in the middle of it. I care for my passeners too much to put them at risk. You have my support on posting this kind of info.
