Default Spinners in the ocean?

Im not sure why but I never hear any mention of spinners being used for Salmon out in the big blue. I hear about all kinds of lures but not spinners or plugs even come to think of it. Am I missing something? Why wouldnt spinners or maybe even a quick fish or something work out there?

Just curious......

I think I know the answer to this one. The main reason no one uses spinners, plugs etc. is...because no one else uses them, hence the fear of looking like a goofball.

We are all just pathetic sheep following the herd.

I suspect just about anything that works in the river would also work in the ocean. However, most ocean setups include some sort of attractant (flasher, dodger, etc.). Your covering a lot of water on the ocean, and unless you run your spinner right through a school, they likely won't even see it, hence, a little slower fishing action than with conventional tackle.

There was a post here a couple days ago of a Coho caught on a tuna jig...so, pull out yer flatfish and give it a go (I'd recommend chrome)...oh, and let us know how it goes.

I dress all of my herring leaders with one or two beads and a small 1" spinner in much the same way that others use hoochies. Helps attract the fish to your bait, however they don't seem to work all that well by themselves without bait. A 4" spoon works real well for that. See the "Coyote Pretty" thread for more info on that one.

As for Kwikfish, they probably work out there too but I hate those things. Reminds me of springer fishing in the river.

Try a black/silver or blue/silver slender diving Rapalla but don't forget to replace the trebles with single hooks.

Went out fishing last year with an old timer.. He put on a quick fish... Changed out the trebles for 2 barbless singles.. He nailed the fish like crazy.. Within 20 min.. he had 2 30+lb chinook in the boat.

Back in the 70s, when Charlie White was making underwater films of salmon following and striking -- primarily in British Columbia waters, as I recall -- he made one claim that I've never forgotten:

No matter what bait or lure you're using, the addition of a spinner at the front of it will make it better.
