Ed Wing Love fest
Hi, I got the question today that I love to get.
"Hey John, I understand you are the guy to ask about saltwater boats ... My old fiberglass boat has got the transom and deck rot real bad and I need to replace it with something made of metal. What would you recommend?"
Why Ed Wing of course!
If any of you soon to be floating in a beer can guys have any pictures post them here.
Any info on these amazing boats, post that here too. Hell, how 'bout an Ed Wing roll call.
Owners? Riders? guys that have ordered a boat?

How about a beer can boat from an Oregon Coast local ... Andy Heathershaw
at Maxweld Boats?? Follow the link below for pictures of mine. Sweet ride,
built like a battle ship.

Re: Ed Wing Love fest
Wow - fish assassin - that think looks like a battleship too! I got a good look at an Edwing last weekend when I stayed with Puffin. Excellent off-shore boat, although the gunnels hit you a little low in the leg because of the big welded air chambers below the floor. A reasonable trade-off though for the extra security the chambers provide.
I also feel plenty safe in my North River Seahawk - another excellent choice. Deep V, excellent welding, high gunnels and a smooth ride even in rough ocean conditions. I'd be interested to know the cost comparison between an Edwing and North River. Anyone know how Edwings are priced?

KT, based upon the numerous pics that have been posted... I suspect the Ed Wing's are priced like any precious metal... by the ounce.

Re: Ed Wing Love fest
Very good, blubeast. The one I saw was a rather utilitarian boat - but I doubt it was cheap either. I'd wager they are less expensive than the Northriver Seahawks for the same length, but it's really a different boat in many ways so probably not a good comparison. What I liked about the Edwing was that with the chambers in the floor, and the scuppers to let water out the back, it looks extremely unsinkable - but of course it could still capsize.

Re: Ed Wing Love fest
As Mellow-Yellow says, "Welp." Sort of a cross between "well" and "help."
I just sold a tricked out 21' Jetcraft to pay for a tricked out 23' Ed Wing. Gonna be a different boat, singing to a different tune.
The Jetcraft was my river-runner, at home in shallow water and inland seas (lakes) where the 12 degree hull was a blessing and land was never far away. Sometimes it was dang close. Wheee!
The Ed Wing in for the Big Pond, deep, deep vee, outboard on a bracket, full cabin, lots of floatation, and the toughness to get me out there and back - even in some gnarly conditions. Lotsa fuel, lotsa range, but not much native beauty, unless you count its usability.
I'll miss my easy access to the rivers, but I ached for the freedom of the Sea, and my friends who live there - Flipper, Shamu, Charley, and FatBoy.
Time will tell. Let the games begin! Details at 11.

Re: Ed Wing Love fest
Skein - do you mind sharing the cost? Your boat sounds like it would be a good comparison to my Northriver. My 23' Northriver Seahawk has a 103 gallon fuel tank, .250 aluminum all the way around, a 250 Yamaha Saltwater Series with a prop, custom splashwell, a 15 horse Honda, a full welded hard top, fishfinder, gpsmap, vhf, etc. and came in at $44,500.
Congratulations on your new boat - sounds like a dandy!

Re: Ed Wing Love fest
KillerTraylor,
Nice boat. Didn't know NR used .25 metal. That's what Ed uses, and it's pretty strong stuff. You've got lots of ponies, too. My motor is a Suzuki 140 4-stroke which should push my boat about 30ish. I decided to go with a 9.9 4-stroke kicker. I mention this because big motors cost big money.
Mine should come in around 34K with a similar array of electronics.
I haven't picked mine up yet, so as I said, details at 11.

Re: Ed Wing Love fest
Popeye,
I was passing through Newport a couple weeks ago, and swung by the docks. It didn't take long to find your boat. I've been sorta hanging low since then, waiting for you hunt me down. I tried my best to get the drool off your gunnel, really I did. That dadgummed Copenhagen stains everything.
Nice boat!

Re: Ed Wing Love fest
Welp, its a little after 11 and I told Skein that I would not post any more pictures until we were floating, but........
Here she is nearly ready for the unveiling (still taped off for the bottom paint job). The shp was dark today with the big doors closed so you will still get to see her in all her glory next time on the water.
One of the differences between these boats and Puffin is the addition of the 3" sheer pipe above the gunwales and the 8" rails. That means the sides hit you about a foot higher than Puffin's.
(Note the rocket launchers...cool, huh.)
Next pics, on the water. Thanks for the patience all you guys who have watched these come together.
Ed says the price of these babies just went up 7% by the way. Still a steal.

Re: Ed Wing Love fest
Skein,
You are getting a lot of boat for the price you are paying. Even with a 7% increase, I am truly impressed. I know this is a sore subject, but how long have you had to wait once you placed your order? I want one!

Re: Ed Wing Love fest
Diamondside,
Yes, that includes a King Model 5400 Saltwater trailer with surge brakes. The 5400 designation is the load capacity and the overall length is right at 27 ft. Should do the job.
Nofish,
Crabbait and I got in the order queue about the middle of February. Ed thought he could start on them in May and be done around the 1st of July. Turns out it was almost the middle of June before he started work, so about six weeks of production time.
He's a pretty easy guy to work with, but you need to go up there and talk to him. He's more comfortable with a plasma-cutter than a telephone.
Monday looks like the day. Monday. Uh...what day is it now?

Re: Ed Wing Love fest
Wow! Awesome looking boat. I'm jealous. That pipe and rail on the tops of the gunnels will be nice - I don't like feeling like I'm going to fall out of a boat when netting a fish, etc. That 140 4 stroke will give you plenty more range than my 250! I'm seriously thinking about switching to a 200 4 stroke. The Puffin has a 130 Honda on it and it probably uses about 50% of the fuel my Yamaha two stroke uses. Thanks for sharing the information and pictures.

Re: Ed Wing Love fest
KT,
The Suzuki is also 100lbs lighter than the 130 Honda, and should be pretty close to the same economy. CB was looking at putting a 225 on the back, but Ed talked him out of it. Said he wouldn't use the extra ponies often enough to justify the extra weight. I forget what the 225 weighed, but it was significantly more than the Suzuki.
We took Ed's advice, and only time will tell. I am NOT interested in being out there with an under-powered boat, so I will let everyone know how this set-up works.

Skein, congrats on joining me in the retirement mode. You will love it. Only problem I have found in the last 6 months is that when I wake up I don't know what day it is. (my wife says I had that problem before retirement). HAPPY BIRTHDAY.

Re: Ed Wing Love fest
I'm really jealous guys, thats a really neat boat. How many people get to watch thier boat being built from scratch. After spending a few years fishing the bays with my little sled, I keep wanting to try the big pond. But I'll have to wait until I get a bigger boat and some time in the water with and old salt. That boat looks like just the ticket for the lower CR and the big pond.

NEWS FLASH: A miracle happened. My boss agreed to work for me on Saturday so I GOT THE WEEKEND OFF AND AM PICKING HER UP SATURDAY MORNING!!!
WHOOOOO HOOOOO!!!
Sea Trails at Chinook Saturday morning, then up to Kalama for shakedown and breakin, all systems check and maybe a sturgeon while I digest a stack of manuals. Probably do the naming ceremony Sat night or Sun.
I'm a little stoked. Puffin and Pilar, its all your fault!

Skein,
I’m in the same position as you only two years behind. Looking for the perfect retirement boat. When that beauty comes in I sure would like to sit down with you and pick your brains a little. I’ve never seen a Ed Wing boat but looking and reading the threads You guys have convinced me I should take a good look. Give us a report how she did on the shake down. Lots of luck with both the Retirement and the new ride.

Re: Ed Wing Love fest
Just to add to the excitement, I was at Englunds in Astoria yesterday and when I walked out the door there was a pickup in the parking lot with "Edwing" on the side dragging two brand new King tandom trailers. Wonder who those are for?
If I knew who Edwing was, I'd a chated with him. Drove through Chinook but didn't know where the shop was. Wife was with me and wouldn't let me stop and ask for directions. :depressed:

Re: Ed Wing Love fest
Just got back from east coast and spotted this old thread - got to get my 2¢ in . . . I would still like to sell this 21' Edwing but the dang thing is so handy I'm still using it for stuff. To be honest the new Maxcat is now getting all my attention but you couldn't ask for a tougher, more fun boat.
