First Duck Hunt all by myself. UH OH - limit SI
Looks like I'll be hunting by myself a lot now
I went to the eastside today and limited out by 9:00!!
It was a blast! This was actually the very first hunt I've ever done by myself.
I had ducks landing in my decoys all morning! over 100 pintail landed in my spread at diffrent time in the day. Way awesome!
I was going to wait it out for some greeheads, but decided to go ahead and shoot what was coming in, cause this doesn't happen just any day on SI.
Here are some pics!
I did a pretty dang good job to focus this picture on the grass!

Outstanding job!!! Good for you and glad you had a ball. There is a lot to be said for solo hunts.

You have discovered something axiomatic to duck hunting.
Limits are far easier to come by on solo hunts.

Re: First Duck Hunt all by myself. UH OH - limit SI
Thanks for all the kind words guys!
Duck hunting with buddies is one of the things that makes it so fun! But this solo hunt definitely had its perks!
I can set the decoys exactly how I want them, Pull the flapper when I need to, pull jerk string at the right times, and best of all.... I'm the only one with a duck call!!!
Thanks again!

Sorry, I didn't mean to portray it that way. Its just a good feeling when you know your doing everything right to get the ducks into your decoy spread. I'll be more careful about that.

Way to go Adj! Beautiful hunt day, and you captured it well with your lens as well as your gun! It didn't look too good early , but once the rain stopped it was apparent there are a a number of new Wigeon on the Island.

The way I see it, if anyone on SI is shooting 7 birds no matter what the species are or gender is, its pretty successful with how bad it has been.

Wow...I was just curious about the comment, didn't mean to start anything. It actually has been pretty good out there. I know of several folks who have shot all mallard limits in the last two weeks..... solo hunting. A bunch of Northern birds have moved in....but what do I know.

Re: First Duck Hunt all by myself. UH OH - limit SI
I have no problem with a guy being happy and pround of a limit he shot and posting about it online. I have done it myself a few times. heck thats what ifish is all about for most of the winter. When that person says things about feeling sorry for the guys next to him becasue he was calling all the birds away, well thats another story.
its no big deal to me. i met andrew last year when i gave him some of my old decoys, i know he is a good guy just from the 15 minutes i spent talking to him and his dad.
how are those bluebills doing?

Re: First Duck Hunt all by myself. UH OH - limit SI
If you guys really want to know and care so much about what kind of ducks I got, I'll tell you the story.
I've hunted quite a few times this year and haven't done to well since Sauvie's has had a slow start. I got into my hunt unit and set out my 5 dozen decoys, flapper duck, jerk string, and made a blind before shooting light. Shooting light came and I had ducks everywhere. With the overcast sky and drizzling rain it was still very dark, so I didn't load my gun for half an hour because I was not going to shoot something that I could not identify. Meanwhile the guys next to me were shooting anything that flew. Once I could identify the birds I loaded my gun and got ready. I had wigeon bombing me every few minutes, and I passed on 7 mallard hens. I hadn't seen one greenhead. After taking my pintail drake and a wigeon drake I told myself I was going to hold out for greenheads. I waited and waited with teal, shovelers, and wigeon buzzing me. Which isn't too easy for a 18 year old kid to hold fire with birds all over at 15 yards. Mallards started working and I missed a nice greenhead that came in. After that the only mallards I saw would work really high and head back to the refuge. With many days in the field and not killing near a limit, I started finishing (shooting) some wigeon that kept landing in my decoys. I have had to many day waiting for mallards to come then not killing a single bird. I identified every hen I shot and I knew what I was shooting. I promise they taste the same as drakes. After having 6 birds in the blind I was going to wait for a a greenhead. But with a group of 7 wigeon working so well I decided to drop a drake and get out of there so that the other guys could continue hunting without one more decoy spread for the ducks to see. I filled a garbage bag of hulls from days of shooting and started walking out just as it started pouring. As a duck hunter who lives for being in the marsh and chasing greenheads, I was not disapointed at all because I didn't get a mallard, but I felt accomlished and as always came away with learning much more about waterfowling.
So yes. I shot some hen wigeon because on "Sauvies Island" I don't always get a fun and exciting hunt like that.

Anytime you shoot a limit is pretty good in my book. Well done! Andrew it wasn’t the calling that got them….it was the decoys

I'm always glad to share a blind with someone.
But I have to say this was the earliest I've limited out. and it was with trying to be very picky.

Hey Andrew,
Nice work man,
Pulling down a full mess of birds by yourself is accomplishment worthy of mention (and remembrance).
have done it, but it has been a long stretch.
I think you may need to hook yourself up with a dog though, (and a boat)
because all of those great birds you'll be getting will mean even more than the ones that you just got
when you are cheering on the spirit
of your own dog.
and as much as I'd like to believe that my feelings are prophetic
I believe you will have all the dog you can handle
in the very near future.
Great photos btw
