South Coast Halibut?
Anyone (TC, MY, Lepper) planning on going out of PO on Friday/Saturday (weather permitting)? What time do you plan on hitting the sling? Be nice to coordinate a convoy for the run out to the spot

Re: South Coast Halibut?
Heya DB, I'm still on the road (Sisters, OR), but will be heading home tomorrow, hopefully to stay for a few weeks. I'm tentatively planning on hitting PO at first light Friday (whatever time that is...I'm so out of touch).
Might bring along tuna gear, but will depend on weather, and whether (whether I can get everything ready Thursday.
If I go Saturday, it will be an afternoon trip, so I'll need some pretty good seas.
However, the following weekend, I'm thinking real hard on camping at Humbug, or any reasonably close-by campground. It would be kinda cool if we could get a few people to hook up and do a PO campout.
Whatcha'll think?

Re: South Coast Halibut?
Not going to be the best conditions if the forecast holds true..
15 knots, with 6 swell and 3 wind... Better bring a kidney belt..
Sounds bumpy maybe it will get better?

Re: South Coast Halibut?
I'm tentatively planning on friday, but the closer we get the less I like the forcast. They've been wrong lately, but it hasn't been very nice the last few days so we'll see. If I don't do it this friday I'll go next friday instead. I'll drop a note here probably by thurs. morning for sure though.

Re: South Coast Halibut?
I agree the forecast looks a little iffy. I plan on being down there at 6:15 to put a "hairy eye ball" to it. It's looking like a change in the weather (for the better) is in the works.
I plan on bringing salmon/bottom fishing gear if we pull up short.
MY-
How is the smoke over in Bend? We had planned on going to Wickiup last week, but posponed due to the fires.
I'll run the camp-out idea by the wife....

Re: South Coast Halibut?
Thinking about it. I would like to see a better ocean. Any salmon reports? If I go I will be at PO about 6:00.

Re: South Coast Halibut?
Well, crud. I'm not sure if I'm going or not. I just got home, and of course, have tons of stuff to do.
I didn't think the forecast sounded all that bad, provided you head back when the 15k starts picking up to the predicted 20k. Even then, it'd be behind you heading home.
I guess I'll make the final call tomorrow...Since I haven't been around, I don't now what mornings have been like. Is it windy at first light, or a late morning thing?

Re: South Coast Halibut?
Well, now everyone I had lined up called and canceled out. If anyone wants a ride or has a ride to offer let me know. Too long a trip to go solo. Will probably just be an early wake-up and drive to look at the ocean anyways, but a guy's gotta dream.
The wind has been picking up around 11 o'clock pretty regularly the past couple of weeks. Out of Charleston the last two weekends we found salmon in 300' of water off the New Carissa. Bottom fishing has been slow off Simpson the last couple times I was there. Depoe Bay Dan and I hit a nice school of Blacks off the end of the North jetty the weekend before last.
I'll be out of town 'till late tomorrow, check back later.

Going to stay a little closer to home this weekend. Maybe next week is in the cards for PO.

Re: South Coast Halibut?
Got up this morning at 6 am and looked out the window to see the trees outside swaying back and forth. No good. So I'm working tomorrow and hopefully looking towards next week. It's gotta stop sometime right??

Re: South Coast Halibut?
Welp, I'm making the call. I'm shooting for next weekend. From what I'm seeing, when the wind does come up, it just does it..like, right now. I don't wanna be 28 miles from my trailer when that happens.
If the weather looks better next weekend, I'm gonna try and pack my camper down to Humbug St. Pk for the weekend. Sure would be nice to not have to drive all the way home each day...I sure wish PO had a marina where a guy could just moor his boat.....sigh
Anyone know if the floating dock is being used now? I'm assuming they were waiting for the COE to dredge the harbor.

Re: South Coast Halibut?
Yeah, it's looking like it's just not in the cards for this weekend. I went by PO at 5 am this morning and the trees were wigglin' pretty good. Came back thru at about 3 pm and it was howlin'.
