Renaming a boat?
Just in case anyone here decides to rename your boat, I just found this page Vigor's Interdenominational Boat Denaming Ceremony for anyone who may be superstitious enough to take heed.
One should never tempt fate too far.
Since the Sea Jypzee was previously named, maybe I should take heed as well.

Re: Renaming a boat?
Nancy...this is good stuff; very good. I would believe the name-changing mojo way before I would ever believe the banana-in-the-boat-no-fish thing.

Re: Renaming a boat?
Yes, I'm actually seriously considering taking that to heart and at least doing the denaming ceramony just to cover all of the possible bases. The boat has been an awsome fishing machine in the time I've owned it. I'd like to keep it that way.

Re: Renaming a boat?
Nancy, there is another old train of thought that may apply here. Since you renamed the boat it has been a fish catching machine, right? Right. So as that old addage goes:
"IF IT AINT BROKE, DON'T FIX IT"
No doubt about your ability and the boats history, it works the way it is......
and that is my 2cents worth.

Re: Renaming a boat?
I don't know...
I was seriously considering renaming my boat and had even done all this research and posted these same ceremonies but....
I think I talked myself out of renaming the boat.
I do have a great name picked out for my next boat... I mean there always has to be a next boat... Right?

Re: Renaming a boat?
Nancy
I had a 16' Arima that I bought from an old gentleman and he had named it Foreplay
I told my now ex wife that it was bad mojo to rename a boat but I don't think she ever bought it. Now I know there is a way to prevent any bad luck. I will have to print this and send it to her.

Re: Renaming a boat?
Nancy- it's only required if the current owner renames the boat in his/her possesion. That can be real bad juju!
You can safely rename a boat that you purchase without going through the ceremony. Posideon is OK with that.
I had to rename Miss B Haven. "Icy Waters" was OK in Juneo I guess but just didn't fit a Tuna Boat at all.

Re: Renaming a boat?
There is much history that goes with renaming a boat. All of it is bad.
My boat never had a name so I am covered. I was the first to name it and the name is good, no plans to change it.
The next boat will be named something else ... hmmm, have to think about that, long and hard.

Re: Renaming a boat?
I'm so superstitious about it I haven't even announced the name of my new boat - and won't until I get it.
Is there a ceremony that revolves around invoking the original name? I mean one that doesn't entail buying huge quantities of beer for fellow sailors and Salty Dogs. I add that because I think I'm broke now.

Re: Renaming a boat?
Skein - Actually there is a christening ceramony associated with naming a boat. Look at the link I put above, at the bottom of the denaming one...
Snapshot - Actually I've not officially renamed it yet. There is only a plaque with its original name on it. I'll remove that, as it was originally used as a 6-pack charter boat. Sea Jypzee is the name that I am giving it, but want to remove all trace of it's former name first before making it official.
Mel - That's good to know. I'll probably go ahead with the denaming ceramony though, just to cover all my bases. I hate leaving things to chance.

Re: Renaming a boat?
I love my boat but hate the name it came with. I have given it another name but have left the old name on the side of the boat for a bit. I figure I'm not testing fate until I remove the old name and put the new one on. Maybe that is wrong of me.
I will do the ceremony after removing the name and then christen the new name with expensive champagne. God help me!!!!
And I thought buying Zukers was the hard part.

Re: Renaming a boat?
Sounds to me like this is a question that should be added to "Pilar's" know your captain post.
"Have you ever renamed your boat, and if you have, what procedures were followed?"

Re: Renaming a boat?
Jypzee,
Yes, I know the words for the Ceremony, but what of the ceremony itself.
Here's what I've found and here's what I'll do:
Buy a bottle of the best champagne you can afford (you don’t want to offend the Sea Gods with the cheap stuff). Say a few words of supplication to every wind and ocean god you can find on the Internet (and don’t forget your own higher power) asking for good will, indulgence and safety for your boat. Pour an enormous libation over the bow of your boat and share the rest with any guests. If you have more than one excellent bottle of champagne, by all means wrap it in a towel and break it over your bow, but it’s a lot harder to do than it looks.
To cement the Naming Ceremony, tradition holds you should then take your newly christened boat out on the water. If it’s a sailboat, luff it up into the wind and drift to a complete stop, then allow it to sail backwards — a boat-length is long enough to appease the spirits. If it’s a powerboat, some traditionalists suggest running it aground (gently, of course). The moderates claim three times on purpose will make the gods happy, while die-hards say these groundings can’t be intentional. It’s up to you.
Skein

Re: Renaming a boat?
Phil Layer - You seem to misunderstand. The procedure that Skein was quoting is for NEW BOATs.
If you want to rename your own OLD BOAT, you have to sink her 3 times first, then you can Safely change the name!

Re: Renaming a boat?
Mel, I thought that was only for submarines?
They are designed for intentional sinking.
