Default Roast Recipe

Hi everyone,

I will be cooking a roast here in the next week and am searching for a good recipe. My roast is about 5 pounds and I am planning on cooking it in a slow cooker, so if anyone has a really good recipe that you are willing to share it would be greatly appreciated.

We brown ours in a frying pan with a little olive oil on all sides and end then into the slow cooker in the morning. Add a package of Lipton onion soup mix and about a third of a pot of water. Let it slow cook all day (makes the house smell fantastic all day). During the last couple of cooking hours we add some baby carrots and sliced baby red potatoes. Make sure you check the water level throughout the day and add as necessary. When ready to eat, pull the roast and set aside, spoon out the carrots and potatoes and set aside. Combine some water and corn starch in a small container and slowly wisk into the remaining broth for gravy. We usually will make some homemade bread during the day to go with the meal and a nice salad.

Great winter meal................

Actually had the roast being described yesterday. Got up at 5 am and put it in the slow cooker, covered with water and onion soup mix and went back to bed. In the afternoon, peeled potatoes and dropped those in on top. House smells fantastic all day. Prior to eating, take out the taters and mash with cream. They will be a little drier than boiled taters so therefore cream is best for this. They will also not be as white as normal but have more of a true potato taste. Meat is for tender. Gravy (lots) made from the water. Save extra gravy for beef soup later.

I like Artwo's recipe. I use a dutch oven. Dredgethe roast in flour and brown it in the hot oil on the stovetop using the dutch oven, then add the water, cover and put in the oven for 3 and 1/2 hours at 350 deg. Add the potatos, onion, garlic and carrots the last hour.

For that extra flavor, pour in about a cup of cheap red port from the grocery store. Add a little more after 2 hrs.

Use the juice to make gravy.
