Remington 742 30-06 ??
Recently aquired an old Remington 742 Woodsmaster 30-06 to use for elk hunting.....it was my grandpa's and he passed away a few months ago so im real glad to have it to use. Its a very early gun according to the serial #, mfg in '63 and in rough shape. Still very useable tho and its the little things that make it more unique anyway right .
I got a bunch of boxes of remington factory 180gr core-locks with it and I ask you guys that shoot 30-06 a lot are these OK rounds ? Accurate as any or ? Anything particularly bad about that bullet/wt/caliber combo? Tomorrow im going to try and sight it in if it doesnt monsoon on me that is.
Thanks!

Shot my first elk with that combo. Core-locks have killed untold numbers of game.
Have fun. Shoot with good memories.

Re: Remington 742 30-06 ??
Last time I stopped in at Al's Marcus had one torn apart and said he saw a lot of them and they work just fine if you don't shoot the factory seconds from Bi-mart. I don't remember what the particular problem was with the gun he was working on, but I guess it comes up a lot.

Re: Remington 742 30-06 ??
Some of them (and the mod 760's) have very poor accuracy. I'm talking 6 to 8 inch groups. Make sure you don't have one of these before taking it into the woods. I haven't shot a lot of them, maybe three or four but I've yet to find one with anything close to acceptable accuracy. The tightest shooting one I've see shot 4 to 5 inch groups.

Re: Remington 742 30-06 ??
I have an old one that was also my grandfathers. It shoots fine. I pulled the scope and intalled a rear peep sight. It is now my western oregon brush gun. It is accurate. Just keep it clean and it should give you years of service. I shoot 165 remingtons out of mine. Work great.

Factory seconds? Why would any ammunition company intentionally put out seconds?

Re: Remington 742 30-06 ??
Just a word of caution about the Remington semi-auto rifle - it was made with a tight chamber so is designed to shoot Factory New ammo. If you do shoot reloads through it, make sure that you use a small base die set so the reloaded cartridges conform to the tighter specs. I found this out the hard way and had to have some parts replaced in my 742 when the extractor broke in my bolt.
Also if you experience poor accuracy check your scope as was already mentioned. If that doesn't fix the problem then make sure that the barrel nut is torqued to the proper specs as it can have a HUGE bearing on performance.

I never liked my 742, sold it off for a bolt action. I have talked with several folks who loved it. But sentimental guns cannot be replaced.

Keep it clean and it will do the work for you. Remington 180 corelokt has killed more elk than anyone wants to see. Good luck and good memories.

Re: Remington 742 30-06 ??
For those people that have a 742, does anyone have an owners manual they could either scan and send to me or copy and send me a copy (id pay for any costs plus your time).....since this gun was handed down to me I have no instructions/user manual/etc.....would be nice to get some instructions on disassembly/parts etc.
thanks!

Re: Remington 742 30-06 ??
These are very desirable rifles. You would do well to fix it up and hold on to it. I bought mine for bear hunting back in the days that we ran dogs. It was great for getting two rounds in the bear before he bailed out of then tree and got into it with the dogs. Later, I fixed it up for deer hunting but I have never used it for that because I decided to go bow hunting exclusively. The 180gr. load is what the gas operation is made for and I would stick with that round. It is not a good idea to experiment around with very light or heavy loads because this affects the operation of the gas ejection. If you decide to put a scope on it I would have a gunsmith do it. I my case the gunsmith had to shim the scope mounts to get it right (3x9 Leuepold). He said he had done a lot of them on this model of gun.

Re: Remington 742 30-06 ??
Iv owned mine since 1978, have killed 22 Elk and lost count on the deer. The only problem I have ever had with my 742 is I took it apart to clean and put the trigger mech. back together wrong( put a spring in backwards) and it jammed on the second shot. I have put my 338 mag. back in the gun safe and am using the 30.06 again. My mounts are bridge mounts so I can use the open sight in low light situations
