Newport Report (Sunday)
Well,
Sunday was nothing like Saturday in terms of ocean conditions. I zipped out over the Yaquina bar at about 6:30 -- saw a lot of boats returning and very few continuing (hmm, wonder If I should do the same?). I followed the Umatilla for a couple of miles before breaking off and venturing out on my own.
I swung the boat around once and was toying with forgoing the trip for friendlier seas another day, but by that time I was already eight miles out, so I swung it back around again and headed NW. I made it to the spot I caught fish on Saturday (11-12) miles and the water had cooled three degrees -- I hit 50.3 for a while, before it dropped to as low at 49.3. The silvers were there in numbers, a lot of natives -- my highest catch rate for natives this year. We ended with eight average sized silvers, and were thankful for that. I didn't chance using downriggers for fear of tangling in the prop -- everytime I slowed to fight a fish the boat wanted to swing hard to the south. The wind was blowing out of the NW hard all day, but it didn't seem to get any worse, at least until I started in at about (9:30 a.m.). Actually about 6-8 miles out wasn't bad. There were some charters cruising around, but they left after about an hour, it sounded like they were heading for the Pile. I also heard a commercial tuna boat talking about having to run at least to the 125 line to find fish. Oh, by the way, I believe Mike (Blitz -- Albacore Tuna Captain) returned to the port this morning after aborting a trip -- I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure he headed out at 5.
I was hailing for 'dogs, but nobody seemed to be around. I did see Puffin flying over the bar as I was going in.
It looks bad 'Dogs for the early part of this week -- really bad. The ocean was not pretty today, and it is suppose to get worse early this week.
Have a great week -- I hoping for about 75 degrees in the valley by the end of the week -- that should lay the big pond down.
