Newport Salmon Carnage 7/26
Hit the bar around daylight and found it quiet pleasurable. I think I past you right at the neck of the jaws Fishplay. We went out to about 200 feet and started trolling. The water was still cold (49 degrees), and after about twenty minutes decided to head for deeper warmer water. We ended up about 13 miles west of the whistle before we found temp that was appealing.
I hailed Fishplay to get a report from the pile and had a fish on while conversing. We found a good pod of big silvers that were hungry We had 6 in the box and two nates back in the drink within an hour and was headed back to port before 9:00. The water was pretty good but it wasn't good enough for me to hunt for some Tuna.
It was nice to talk to you dawgs out there and I hope the numbers I gave you guys put you on some fish. Never try and give out number while your trolling I gave up my location a couple of times while I was cutting circles trying to get back into the pod of fish. Looks like the people that were catching fish had to go out to find them. They were not biting off the beach like last week. I think I'm gonna bag tomorrow due to the predicted conditions and vac pac some salmon. Most fish were taken at 8 pulls with a coyote spoon (blue/silver with fish scales, and green/white with fish scales and a little blade on the hook), behind a fish flash and diver. The hardware outfished herring by a long shot.

Re: Newport Salmon Carnage 7/26
I'm glad someone found many. We too left at daylight and went straight out and then ended up due west of the lighthouse in about 260' of water. We worked very hard for the two we actually got to keep. One was the smallest I have ever kept, maybe 4# and my buddy caught his first silver that was a whopping 9 1/2#'s, the biggest I have seen yet. I did see a bunch on the dock when I came back in. Also saw a nice Chinook at the cleaning station.

Re: Newport Salmon Carnage 7/26
Wak,
Dan, you might have been a little to far south for the chinook? Took some, north of you today. They are down below the silvers, say 60' and down. Around 125' was best for me. Lots of pesky coho here, hard to get down through them. I wanted to concentrate on chinook only, but had a sick one on board so finished out on coho and went home. I think with patience , you could get a good catch of chinook.
I would guess that I was north of you about 3 miles and a little inside.
Any of you guys that would like my numbers, E-mail me at GRich912@aol.com and I will be glad to give them to you. Probably as good as any place to start looking.
Will check the mail last time at 9PM and then off to bed for another day of fishing, if I get a crew.
Good luck,
Jerry

Re: Newport Salmon Carnage 7/26
I just had a thought, my VHF radio is toast, will not work on several channels. That includes 78, so I didn't have any contact with the "dogs." I do have CB on channel 22.
Will be committing my Icom to the deep tomorrow and buying a new one next week.

Re: Newport Salmon Carnage 7/26
Hey tackle sorry to have missed you. We must have passed you on the way out. Wee hit the spot about 8:30 and limited out in about an hour and a half. We had non stop fish but had to relase quiet a few. tough way to the spend the day huh? We had a ton of fun. we were fishing four poles but never had more than three in the water at one time. We were taking hits just trying to get gear down. It was all pretty fun. I guess I am gooing to have to break out the second smoker. maybe put of a road side stand
Anyway hope to catch you another time.

Re: Newport Salmon Carnage 7/26
Fisher Price- Glad to hear you guys got into some fish. How far out did you guys go to find your fish? We tried at about 8 miles out but couldn't get into them. We ended up going 13 miles out before we found some. The water temp was about 51 when we started hitting them. Do you have an inboard or the Outboard Outback model? I hope to be back out on Thurdsday and then off to Ilwaco for the B-10 opener. You guys wanna run on Thursday?

Re: Newport Salmon Carnage 7/26
Jerry, good to talk to you out there. You were the only one I talked to, only because you drove up to within shouting distance! Sorry to anyone that was trying to hail me yesterday. I tried to reply but kept blowing fuses so finally had to give up and go fishing. Getting a new radio this week also.

Re: Newport Salmon Carnage 7/26
Rod,
And likewise, it was great to talk to you guys Sat. Pilar told me where you were at, so I looked you up on the way home.
Scratched Sunday, you probably no why? Just looked at the web cam on the bridge, can't see the jetty and it blew up to 25mph.
Do you have a suggestion for a VHF? Don't no what to buy yet. I had nothing but trouble with my Icom. Any help would be appreciated.
Would you like me to drive buy again and talk you on a fish? Nice fish, about 20 or 25?
Possibly next time you could return the favor?
Jerry

Re: Newport Salmon Carnage 7/26
We went out Sat 14 miles, 51-53 degree water. out of the 17 fish at the boat between the three of use we only could keep two finless. our bait must have said natives only.
Had one silver hit the hoochie on the surface, and lost two nookies at the boat.

Re: Newport Salmon Carnage 7/26
Good job on the fish Tacklebuster!
Fishhawk (and family) and I went out of Garabaldi on Saturday. We found a lot of native coho, but finish out our limit of 8, with a nice Chinook. We fished approx. 4 miles out.
What a zoo that Garabaldi days made for getting out of town, but at least we had a front row seat for the parade!

Re: Newport Salmon Carnage 7/26
I'm not sure about this weekend, we've been talking about it though. I'd love to get into some of those silvers out of Newport or Depoe Bay, but our boat just isn't big enough for us to feel safe out on the big pond. And my brother-in-law who I went out with a couple of years ago sold his boat, so we will be sticking around Astoria. We have been hitting KP and getting lots of shakers. I wouldn't know what to do with a keeper right now anyway, cause the freezer is pretty full after the estuary trips!!!!(Thanks to your help!!)Heck, I may have to get a bigger freezer!!

Re: Newport Salmon Carnage 7/26
Tacklebuster,
Sorry we missed that action on Saturday. We put up posts for a retaining wall all day and then tried to fish on Sunday. We got our butts kicked by the rough water that had come up during the night and called it quits before we even got a line wet.
I hope to head out this coming weekend. Stay safe! SD
