Default Marine weather forecast

Guys,
I'm thinking of going out of Tillamook Monday or Tuesday for salmon. Tides look good but the marine weather forecast is for 4-ft and 3-ft. wind waves, which is too rough for me.

I've noticed similar marine forecasts in effect the last week or two, yet keep hearing of smooth ocean conditions.

The question is: if I cross early and return early (say by 11:00am) am I likely to be off the water before it gets rough?

thanks in advance....Mike

Mike, I've been noticing the same thing. I've missed out on some really nice days because of the forecast. I guess the best thing to do, is to go down and check it out. I know its a long drive if you don't get to go, but its the only way to know for sure.

Mike;
I am new to ifish. Today is my first day. I go fishing in the Ocean a lot and I use a Sixteen foot inflatable. Been doing it for Twenty years with smaller inflatables yet. In my opinion, the biggest thing to watch when going out over the bar Besides the size of the swell is the wind
speed. All waves are generated by wind. Waves get bigger as the wind speed gets stronger and that
is at a non linear rate. Rule of thumb: Once the wind gets over 15 miles per hour, Forget it. Well Ok
if the morning is Zero flat and the ocean is like glass, go for it but once the wind kicks up, usually
around tide change, I reel up and head for shore. Although a couple of weeks ago I got caught
outside when the Wind was 29 mph but we headed straight in. I don't like it when it's too rough
to tie a hook. I looked at the weather for Tuesday and I probably won't leave town to go fishing.
But If I was already at the coast I would consider it. The problem is the way NOAA forecasts the
weather. They predict the worst condition for that day. So if the Ocean is say one foot seas and
six foot swells in the morning but NOAA determines that at Five oclock in the evening an Eight foot
swell will come in and the wind will kick up a four foot sea, then they will predict that for the whole dang day. Not very useful if you are a fisherman. In the old days they use to give a morning
and an evening report. You are going to have to learn how to do your own weather forecast.
I would rather be safe then sorry. I have missed many a fine day of fishing, but I haven't been
caught out in a really bad ocean where I was afraid for my life yet.

Use the Coast Cams. They are very revealing, makes you wonder what NOAA is smoking.
Lysters will give you an updated report, call Sherry.

Good luck. and there is no fish worth dying for.
