Blacktail season opens tomorrow
I came in from outside just a while ago and the rain was beginning to fall. This is it. This is the time we've all been waiting for...the last week of the season, rain, temperature dropping. Its all coming together. Just like it was supposed to. You guys that got your wall-hangers early can sit back and take it easy while the rest of us are out there wet, cold and miserable, and wondering why we do this. We do it because there are blacktails. Three cheers for us. May everyone be safe, and look back when its over with thankfulness that we could be there.

Re: Blacktail season opens tomorrow
I agree. Shoot your buck opening day, awesome! Hunting season is over, dang!
It's a crap shoot with blacktails either way. Just get one on the ground and then look at the date.
That's the way to go . BH

Re: Blacktail season opens tomorrow
Just like clockwork. Good rain all night (not good if you're working in it...) and I pull into my parent's Gaston driveway this morning in the dark at 6:30 to be greated by a beautiful wide 3 pt. Of course he was gone by light. First deer we've seen around here in about 3 weeks.

Re: Blacktail season opens tomorrow
Yep , go get em boys, I have been hunting all week and not seeing any living thing, On the way into the woods this am before light we see a fork wondering aimlessly looking for love, then about 9 am driving to a different area we see a spike buck, same MO, a minute later a nice forky chasing three does on some private property, we get to our spot and i walk down into some reprod in an attempt to chase these deer my buddy has been seeing over to him but low and behold there standing accross the canyon is a nice buck(Now hanging) And then on our way out another spike walking down the road with no care in the world, They are moving.
Good luck

Re: Blacktail season opens tomorrow
Took my daughter out today with a doe and buck tag to fill in the Wilson Unit. Saw a doe first thing, tiny though so we passed. Later saw a nice forked horn in the bottom of a draw, 140 yards broadside. Daughter couldn't find it in her scope, so off he trotted. Ended up on he other side of the draw 3 hours later. Saw the same fork, this time she found him, but only had a head shot which she didn't want to take. He turned broadside, and took off running, no shot so he lives another day. Going to be back there on Sunday, hopefully 3rd times a charm!!!
FYI, his neck was huge!!!!

Re: Blacktail season opens tomorrow
Man, it stayed dark late this morning. The rain wasn't too bad...I wasn't soaked through till about noon. Snuck through the brush, snuck through the timber, snuck the ridges and the creek bottoms. No deer, no tracks, few rubs. About 2 PM come to a clear-cut. Hey, there's a deer. Its a girl. Wonder if she's got a boy friend. Nope...just a kid. Finally figures out I'm there (can't control the cough from a recent cold) and they are off for the nearest cover. Go up through the clear-cut to the road to go to my next "hot spot" (saw four bucks in one day there two years ago), and the clear-cut is full of rubs. Hmmm. So, the deer are coming from over the hill instead of up from the bottom where I spent the morning. There is someone parked at my hot spot. Hmmm. I'm tired.

I have next wek off. Going to hit it hard, and hopefully can connect on a buck. Good luck to all who are trying to fill their tags.

Re: Blacktail season opens tomorrow
Normally I don't hunt on Saturday, but I had a plan. The deer don't have to use the area because they can stay in the over-grown clear-cuts nearby, but I've killed a couple here in the past so can't resist. Too warm out. Its hard to keep from over-heating. Imagine what the deer are going through with their winter coats on. I gotta start hunting better areas...where there are deer now instead of 4 years ago.

Re: Blacktail season opens tomorrow
They're still around. Saw a forky this morning right at first light. Another rainy night too. It was about a quarter mile from the 3pt I saw last week. Go get 'em!

Re: Blacktail season opens tomorrow
I'm hoping they are active in the evening this week. We tried to get my wife her buck all weekend and couldn't get it done. We were in an area that is holding deer. Tracks everywhere, fresh rubs, but no deer seen. Hopefully we get a look at them. I was, however, quite impressed that she would hunt all day for 2 days in the rain. We shall see...
