The girl at the register
On the way home from work I stopped at the local gas station/mini-mart to top off the tank and get a six pack.
When I approached the counter the college girl(who is a very nice, intelligent lady) almost refused to check me out because I had a bumper sticker on my truck supporting a candidate she does not support.
We bantered a bit, I countered her arguments while three people stood in line behind me.
I shook it off as I left.
I know this was unprofessional for her to do this, but I let it slide.
Anyone else here encounter this on their day to day travels?

Re: The girl at the register
Lotta strong feelings going all ways the past 20 years. It's unfortunate that our national civility suffers from that situation. It didn't use to be this way, I think before talk radio and end of the 'equal time' doctrine.

Re: The girl at the register
Honestly, it used to be that people would get brutally beaten for praising the wrong candidate in the wrong neighborhood. People would be coerced into voting for a candidate, or taken for some free beers before voting ("These drinks were courtesy of Joe, mind you").
If all you have is a young woman who needed a brief education on democracy, then I think you both are better off than how it was 100 years ago.

Re: The girl at the register
My wife, 4 year old son and I went to Lowes last week and a woman walked up to us as we entered the store. As we walked past she came up to me and said "Are you voting for one of the candidates!!!??". Taken a bit by surprise I said "ummm no..". Clearly seeing the opportunity to convince me of her candidates validity she yelled out "Shame on You!!" and quicky walked away. Ya, way to represent your candidate.

Re: The girl at the register
A friend of mine is unemployed and having a tough time finding a job, so he got a gig going door-to-door for a US Senate candidate to pick up a few extra bucks.
So far he's only had one person threaten to shoot him, but a lot of people have hurled some fairly virulent verbal abuse in his face. One lady screamed that he was "Satan's spawn" before slamming the door.

Well thats a fairly simple one. EVERYONE knows that an Orange "O" is much more qualified to be in the white house now dont we!
I guess we can rely on the Civil War to hash this one out...or we can just rely on the last two for history is a good indicator of the future.

Re: The girl at the register
I recently had a young lady at a fast food restaraunt ask me who I was voting for (president). I simply told her "The right person" and that it really wasn't any of her business. I then asked her if she was even going to vote. Her response was " I don't think I'm registered". End of conversation.

If taken out of context it can mean anything. If you read the whole thing and try to make it political - it makes no sense.

Re: The girl at the register
I actually think politics are something that should be talked about. You never get anywhere not understanding the other side of issues. Not discussing it leaves a person too close minded.
That being said, it is not talk radio that has stirred the people, it is thier anger at the money being spent (specifically in this state) to smear the opposite candidate using lies and decieving tactics. No one side is different than the other, and sadly, it seems they are all too similiar in thier political beliefs and tactics. I am not sure after seeing all the garbage who would vote for either one
I am looking forward to November 5!

Re: The girl at the register
There is a place and a time for everything. (Well, many things!) Politics should be taken for seriously and discussed, but the time and place is what is critical, in my opinion.
We don't do politics here for exactly this reason, so please... watch your step on this thread, OK? Scares me! BOO!
Thanks,
Jen

Re: The girl at the register
I knew a guy who got shot and killed about 6 months ago over an argument started over a political bumper sticker. The other guy is on trial for murder right now. Absolutely ridiculous.
Personally I think putting a presidential bumper sticker on your car is pretty pointless in Oregon. It's a decided state by a huge margin. Your bumper sticker is never going to change that. Your vote and th vote of thousand of your friends isn't going to change it. As long as presidential politics are decided by the electoral college, it's silly to get emotionally involved in presidential politics, cause your vote is basically worthless.
Not to mention presidential politics have thrived off of dividing half the country from the other half, and all the sheep buy into the negative smear campaigns and end up hating "the other guy." I refuse to play that game and hold my friends and neighbors beliefs against them. This is my least favorite time of the year right now. If it wasn't for football season, I'd be miserable.
Local and state politics are an entirely different beast of course. Your vote and opinions are very important in those cases (but the same smear tactic nonsense does apply there as well).
a few more days and we can get past all this.

Amen. The root of the problem is really the two party system, which creates the motivation to divide everything into either/or, black/white types of discussions. In a two way debate, you can make progress by tearing down the other guy/team. In a multi-way debate, you need to talk up the merits of your approach.
What we need to do in this country is get rid of the two party system.

This is absolutley correct! What is disheartening though is that if there ever were an electionfor a third party to either steal the election or ty to get the required votes for public funding - it would be this one.
Unfortunately both parties have done an excellent job of polarizing the middle and bringing out the worst in those who are passionate about the issues. What we really need is a labor based party - something to represent the portion of people who usually decide the elections.

Re: The girl at the register
BAck to the subject....
I am currently in Israel. All my Israeli coworkers and just about any body that hears my american accent (and I don't speak Hebrew) are intensly interested in my opinion on the election. Who am I voting for, why? Why is this guy better than that guy? This guy said this, that guy said that - what do you think?
It is also local election season here. I swear, one of the candidates for Mayor of Ashkelon is Monica Lewinski. If I can get a pic of a poster, I'll add it in this thread

Interesting you mention that.
We are currently hosting a Rotary Exchange Student from France, and our daughter spent a year in Brasil (their spelling) last year. We were talking last night about how all the rotary kids from all over the world, when they get together for group functions are talking about how their parents, friends and relatives are watching the American elections with intense interest. They are all being grilled on the things the candidates are saying and doing, and are expected to show expertise in all things in American politics.
It is a HUGELY world event.

And, compared to all the other fluff that we Americans distract ourselves with, "it" actually does matter.
THis past August I was in Louisianna, and as we worked diligently on our guilt-free-crawfish-etoufee-more-pastry & beer-for-me eating tour, I'd make it a point to ask the restaraunt workers about the election.
It was very interesting to hear their perspectives. Some of their concerns were very different than what we have in the NW.

Re: The girl at the register
In my opinion, if you have a political bumper sticker, shirt, sign in your yard, etc. you are publicly displaying your views and you should not be upset if a member of that public calls your views into question, as long as it is done in a polite, civilized manner. I think not serving you in a service profession crosses that line pretty clearly.
But answer me this, please, why is that bumper sticker there? Are you changing other peoples minds? Or just loudly and constantly expressing your opinion?
I hate the signs, bumper stickers, and bad emotions that go with elections. I can't wait for it to be over.

Re: The girl at the register
I read an article on comcast about a man who had signs for one presidential canidate stolen from his yard several times so he electrified the sign
Then a young boy who was putting up signs for the other guy came into his yard and got shocked touching the sign
Are we going in the wrong direction?
I listened to a woman at work saying one of the presidential candidates was going to eliminate the constitution
That seems a little far fetched
As far as slinging mud what happened to the days when they said what they believed in and what they were going to do if elected most of the time they didn't but at least it was better than these guys trying to make the other guy look bad
Just about all of them say they are going to lower taxes, eliminate the deficit, and create jobs
Then after they get elected none of this happens and it all seems to get worse
The question I would like an answer to: Is this the best either party has isn't there someone better?
I hope I have not offended anyone But it seems like it gets more ridiculous every election

Re: The girl at the register
Why worry? I know my "secret vote" will only count for who I want, no matter if they win or lose. If the candidate screws up, I can say "see I knew the other one was better". Or if they are great, I can say "I knew this one was the best". Too many friendships have been lost over politics. People get violent sometimes and then friends are no longer friends.
Our Lodge does not allow any political talk and this keeps friends closer.
Besides we all know the best candidate is Alfred E. Neuman, Esq.

Beavis and Butthead will ruin the country, I'll have you know. I have it from a good source that they are secretly Marxist terrorist sympathizers who repeatedly urge Al Queda to "fire, fire, fire". In fact Beavis is not even a natural born American citizen, and in one episode was deported to Mexico. The main stream media has covered this up and are hiding the evidence in an attempt to foist a couple of communists on an unsuspecting American public. You need to go to Wikipedia to know the truth about them. They are about the only objective source of information left in this country.

Re: The girl at the register
I thought you were going to say something like:
"I have been buying a six pack every day
from a girl at the local mini mart
for the last few years,
for me,
my buddies,
and some days a hound dog has a sip or two off the brew.
She'd always smile and ask how I was,
make pleasant small talk,
and sometimes say,
"Hey mike, it is good to see you".
So, after I shaved,
put on a fresh shirt and combed my hair,
I walked into that store and asked her what time her shift was over,
cause I'd like to take her out for a dinner someplace she'd like
if she could make the time.."
But it is just an election thread...
Dang!

The only colors that I've ever worried about were/are Scarlet and Gold. Semper Fi.

The one thing that both parties agree on, is that they don't want us having more than 2 choices.

The orange ones look like zeros to me. Especially the one on Gary's head.

In a nutshell...YEP!
On a side note, does a fresh shirt have to be clean or can it just be fresher than the rest of them lying on the floor and do wrinkles (shirt) add character?

Just turn it inside out and give it a good shake and your good to go. Oh you might want to cut the tag off of it while your at it too.

Or hang it in an open window for about 30 minutes. You get the character of the wrinkles without the funk!

Sorry - What I meant was a party that represented the common, blue collar "Joe the Plumber". I find it rather disheartening that the working class has been forgotten over the last 16+ years. Now that both parties are depending on this crucial aspect of the vote, they have begun to exploit them. Wall street, whoever the president was, has taken a precedence over main street.
If you look back, Who were the first groups that candidates from both parties ran to after their party endorsed them. I can tell you this much, it wasnt the AFL-CIO, UAW, big tobacco or any of the public service unions. Those unions are the heart of this country and have been left out in the proverbial cold. I can tell you this much, some of them wre not even american special interest groups.

If she owned the Store I guess she could have told you to take a hike.

Beavis and Butthead are limited to two terms and they have served them as I recall, but its been awhile. I'm not sure what party they are for, I asked them and they said "Party?! Party?! We are for all of them!, heh-heh,....Ya!"
I guess its possible that they get re-elected if the voting machines malfunction.

Re: The girl at the register
As usual I haven't thought this through HOWEVER I was THINKING...I would be for a "small" contribution from my taxes each year to go to a "pool" to be used for equal publicity for each party's top candidates. I'm thinking that it would give the "not so rich" an opportunity to get their "slams and digs in" too...(just kidding). Actually, it would give a third party candidate the opportunity to state their case. It appears that currently its only a rich or maybe "bought off" person that can successfully run a campaign. I sure would like to see SOMEONE represent us middle class working folks. Then everyone would be covered...the big business people, the poor, and we who seem to carry the load.

I hope that in the future, all talk of election and politicians revolves around how they can help sustain and improve our fisheries and fishing/harvest opportunities. Everything else doesn't belong.
