Default Buckhunter Jr's First Deer. Updated Pics!

About 5:15 pm yesterday it was time to take Luke, my 10 year old to football practice. Jake needed to get some shoes for basketball so the three of us piled into the car. Driving down our driveway I looked at the field across the road and saw a shape above the blackberries that wasn't there the last time I looked. Yep, it's a deer! Hand me my binos! (The new Zen-Ray 10X42s!) It's a buck! Jake said "can I go get him"? Heck yes, go get your stuff and meet me at the bottom of the driveway! So Jake bailed out of the car and ran back up to the house for his gun, I flew down and dropped Luke off at football practice and on the way home my cell phone rang.

Here's the conversation:
Jake:
DAD, pant,pant,pant!
Buck, pant,pant,pant!
Cross,pant,pant,pant!
hairs, pant,pant,pant!

Me: DO NOT PULL THE TRIGGER TILL I GET THERE!!!!!! Click.....

I parked in our drive and got into the field and found Jake about 75 yards past the buck he had walked right in front of about 100 yards up the hill. I'm not sure why it didn't spook.
After a bunch of hand signals back and forth neither one of us could understand, he pulled the trigger.
BOOM!!!! He hit what looked to be a little high and back but it was a nice lung/liver shot. The buck jumped, took about 5 steps and hit the floor.
I checked with the rangefinder: 140 yards, up hill, with a heart rate in the 120+ range (I could hear the hummmmm).
.243 Win 85gr did the job!
As you can see, He's a little happy about having to wait a few days for his new basketball shoes.
Buckhunter.

And here is the reward. We cut it up Monday night (11/3) and had backstrap on the grill Tuesday. Notice the smile? Still there a week later!
(The pic is a little dark because it was taken with my cell phone.)

Very nice! Thanks for telling the story. Tell Jake he made a very nice shot for that distance. I think he might be hooked. What did bro think when he saw the buck?

Very nice!

Is that a "mentored" buck from your tag? It makes it really nice and easy to get the younger kids interested and involved.

Good job!

No, it was on his Western Deer tag. And might I say, Last year he ended up with tag soup because he thought hunting was more important than school and spent a few weekends on "probation". This year the grades couldn't be better and we couldn't be happier. He EARNED this one! BH

Very nice shooting Jr!!! I can say from first hand experience that this young man can shoot. So I am pretty sure the story went more like this.... Buckhunter missed and Jr. picked up the slack. Hahahahaha just kidding. Nice shooting!!!! A trophy for sure.
