Default Back to school question

Well, I am trying to figure out if I want to do my Algebra trio (Math 89/91/93) in an online forum through Clark College (here in Vancouver)

or

If I should drive down to the school each day for a 1 hour class..for Winter/ Spring/ Summer term?

Has anyone here taken an Online Algebra course?

I did my English Research Writing course online, and did very well

& the thought of not having to drive to the school each day and being able to dedicate time to the course each day (at a time that is best for me) is appealing.

I am concerned that my rusty algebra/math skills may need more face to face time with the teacher.

Maybe I should just do the online class and hire a tutor to review the material with me?

Clatsop C.C. had a math tutoring center. It was open certain hours for drop-in help. OIT had the same thing. Does Clark maybe have something like that?

I took those classes at Clark 7 years ago and I was horrible at math. The teachers that I had were great and a large portion to me passing will all A's. If you are weak in math I recommend taking them in class.

how much math do you have to ultimately take. If it is just nail these then online.. but FTF is best. And if you are planning to go Trig, and calc.. then FTF for algebra is a must. the hardest part of calc IMEO is doing the algebraic manipulations..

I placed quite high in math.. but that was a mistake.. so I spent years recovering from going too fast in math at the beginning.. build a solid base and go from there.

The last time I took a math course was in 1987.
it was in Mrs Barlow's class and I got a B
It was High School Algebra.

All I have to do is get through math 89/91/93
three terms of less than full on College Algebra

I studied for about 3 hours before taking my math assessment and it gave me an 89% at Math 090 level.

I do not know how Algebra is going to help me with X-rays.

Kind of like when My father had to know how to design a sewage treatment plant as a component of being licensed to practice Neurosurgery and Neurology in
Oregon and Washington.

I use my math all the time.. solving home projects etc.. even worked up many equations to get them right.

But it sounds like you are fine to go online- if you got a 90%... there aren't really many new topics until you get to 101.. and that is where you must have done well in the previous series you need to take. so if not going on to 101 do it the easiest way is my suggestion.

I say take it online. If it was calculas, I would say take a class. I took statistics online through a community college and it was real easy. I just had to go in for the tests.

Don't forget, C's equal degrees.

I agree 100%. do you best but a C is a passing grade.. take the course online. i've taken a bunch of online classes and have always done better. I do better when i can do the class work on my schedule not on a set time each day.

Thanks Weston, I won't bring up football this year. But also, when you transfer the credit from a community college, the grade does not matter if it is a C or above. Only the credits transfer, not your GPA so it won't affect your GPA at your university.

As a math major, I can say that I did much better in class when I showed up. For certain classes I though I could just read the teachers online notes and do the work on my own time instead of going to class. Those were the classes I did the worst in. I say if you have the time, take the class in person. Watching someone else write out the problems and having other students there to ask questions is really valuable.
