If your not seeing game you might re-evaluate you location. Make sure the wind is right, keeping in mind it will often change as the day progresses. Are you seeing fresh sign in your spot? The rut is coming, if its not already here. If your sitting in a good area with active trails and not too much hunting pressure its only a matter of time. 3 hours is not long at all of conditions are good for sitting and watching a game trail that you know is being used.

Hey, don't feel bad.....I haven't seen a darned blacktail all season.
Not counting the ones that ran across the road & through the headlights.
But that's not abnormal.....unless your getting in the mature timber where their bedding area's are.
This blue bird weather really bites. And ODFW creaping the seasons forward each year doesn't help.

Maybe THIS weekend we'll all get lucky.

I've probably spent about 100 hours hunting/glassing this season, and haven't seen a deer yet. I'm not sure there actually ARE any deer. But it's fun anyway.

Well I am with you all. I filled my tag the first week of season and continue seeing some dandy bucks down here in Southern Oregon. I saw a very nice buck chasing some does two weeks ago, but then the weather turned nice and they slowed down. I think with this weather coming in this weekend, there should be some bucks out chasing does. Keep at it and it will happen. I tried rattling last weekend with no success. I hope this weekend is better. Work the edges of older clear cuts. I have noticed the bucks at the edges as the does walk out in the open. Good Luck!!

A blacktail can sit still longer than you have the patience to.. So 3 hours is nothing. He can out wait you , you can stare over the top of him for 2 hours.. leave , come back, and he is still in the huckle berries watching you with that white face of his.. oh man I love blacktail hunting.

IMHO if you are confident in an area, or have an animal located; that is to say you have a good hunch he is there because of rubs, previous spottings, tip from a bud etc.. you stay in the area. You may want to have a couple places you look in on,, say from time to time.

they don't go UP the mountain or Down because it is Hot, Wet, Windy, snowy.. they live there.. go shoot'm.

Hunt for sign of animal activity 1st! Then hunt for animals
Meaning don't spend a bunch of time hunting in an area that has no fresh signs of activity. Once you find an area that is "gamey", slow down and stay quiet. Sit down and observe often.

Good luck!

Sounds like you're hunting nocturnal deer. Either it was a full moon and they could easily feed at night or you're hunting deer that are under heavy pressure. For instance, I grew up on blueberry farms and those deer were VERY nocturnal! We never saw deer during daylight hours. Catch them traveling from feeding to their bedding area at dawn or find less educated deer.
