56 cents is criminal!!!!
I was in a store today and saw tombo tuna for sale what ever that is? The price was $9.75 lb I've also seen albacore for around the same price in years past, and was curious as to what commercial guys were paid for their catch. I know that it usually is under a buck for some of the freshest most awesome fish around but was floored when I called a place in Newport and I was told that the going price was 56.5 cents!!!!
This is a crime what is done to the hook and line fishermen that are even trying to scratch out a few extra bucks, let alone a person trying to make a living doing this. Now I understand that most of this is canned and not sold as the primo fish that it is, but I can't get over this. Other than sell the fish off the dock what are these hard working guys and gals supposed to do?

Yes, it is very sad the way they're paid. This is why so many of them go out in horrid ocean conditions, just so they can get enough fish to scratch out a boat payment etc.

Supply and demand sets the price folks. There are just too many commercial fisherman catching too much fish.

Re: 56 cents is criminal!!!!
the sad part of it all is that the price gets to that hacked state due to fisherman not setting the price and sticking together. soon as they are gone the price skyrockets. fish are not presto logs and should not be sold as such.
I Will NOT!
good fishin'
got tuna?

Tombo is albacore (they call it tombo in Hawaii)
The 56 cents isn't criminal, it's the $9.00 + per pound they charge in the store!

Re: 56 cents is criminal!!!!
Yeah, tell me about it! hehehe
Kings are only bringing $1.25.
So if I fill my boat up, with fish stacked 8' high and hanging over the sides, I should be able to break even for the trip.
By the way, I think the $.56 price was caused because of Fish Assassin's last albacore landing!

Re: 56 cents is criminal!!!!
Oh yeah, I forgot, I wonder if I told the wholesaler it was Tombo (instead of albacore) if he'd give me a better price?

Re: 56 cents is criminal!!!!
Before you guys get too upset, what if the price at the wholesaler was $5 a pound? There would be a bunch more commercial fishing effort and a whole bunch more pressure on these fish.
I feel for the commercial guys that I know personally, BUT as a sport fisherman, low prices=less commercial fishing pressure=more fish for sport fishing.

Re: 56 cents is criminal!!!!
The problem isn't with supply and demand or over capitalization by the commercial fleet. The problem is with the packers... They've been sticking it to the Fishermen for years and have managed to work themselves into a price fixing scenario.
Its an amazing thing when you look at the ex-vessel price and then the market price the consumer pays... Look at who's taking all the risk and who's making all the money.
Just look at the migration of the tuna cannery's south into Mexico. Except for San Pedro, CA and San Diego... there all south of the border.

Re: 56 cents is criminal!!!!
I've noticed a lot of commercial guys down here in bandon are starting to sell to the general public off the boats.. $3 a pound is alot better then 56 cents!
