Remember to vote!!!!!!
Looks like as of yesterday we have a state-wide ballot return of 24%. Please remember to turn in your ballot.
If you don't vote, you don't have the right to whine and moan come next Wednesday, IMHO.

I stood in line in Ohio for 6 hours to vote because I live in a poor neighborhood. My brother who lives in West Virginia, touched the candidate of his choosing 5 times before it registered. His friend had the same thing happen, only after 3 tries, he pushed the other candidate to see if it worked, and of course it did. Confused, he left.
My Grandmother, who can't see well, couldn't read the 1pt writing on her ballot in Florida. Luckily, the nice lady from the Church, who's husband is an oil man, helped her fill it in.
Should I go on?

The mail in ballots here leave a lot of room for fraud. I sometimes wonder if it's not already going on (here in Oregon).

I agree....... If all they do is match signatures..I could sign any name I want ..as long as the sig on my registration matches the sig on the back of my ballot envelope, and the adress is an actual salem address , then they accept it?????????????????weird..

Ballot mail in fraud could be the biggest growth industry in Florida, Mississippi and Alabama if they get mail in ballots.
Already took our 3 ballots in.

Out of curiosity, when is the last day that we can submit the ballot by mail and expect that it will be received in time?

Postmarked by Nov 4th @ midnight; kinda like taxes. ***EDIT*** As you will see several posts later, I ammended this to be Clark County. Oregon ballots must be in by 8p on Nov 4th.
Lost my ballot so I had to make a special trip to the county auditor this afternoon. Filled it out on the spot and saved a stamp Now I can complain on Wed.

Re: Remember to vote!!!!!!
I just drop mine off in the ballot box, but I'm in a small town so that's easy to do.
I do take issue with the idea that you should vote just for voting's sake.
I don't want a bunch of uninformed new voters voting for a candidate based on how cool they are or anything besides what the candidate stands for.
If you don't care enough to study the issues, and your inspiration to vote comes from MTV, please stay home.
Voting is a right and a privilege. Something like that should be cherished. If folks don't care enough to get out and do it, I'd rather they not vote at all.

please define "uninformed new voters voting"?
perhaps you fall into that category based on someone else's definition?
what you are suggesting is a slippery slope taking us back towards the 1790s

I suppose it may be different in OR however in Clark county:
Clark County, WA – The deadline to return voted ballots for the November 4 General election is rapidly approaching. Ballots being returned by mail must be postmarked November 4 or earlier.
http://www.clark.wa.gov/elections/ne...pkNewsSeq=1612
Now on the issue of why bother since we know at the end of the day... I'm going to refrain from getting on my soap box for fear of having my account deleted.

I normally try and stay out of these types of discussions, but I tend to agree with this statement. The heavy "get out the vote" push to get all the young kids out and voting isn't done for purely altruistic reasons. Younger voters tend to side with one particular party, so the more young people who vote helps out that party. The same thing with people from the metro area. You don't see big voter drives outside of the heavy metro areas (although some of this is probably just logistics).

I wouldn't say that. No think they are saying if you can't make an informed decision on basic facts, don't vote.
There are people thinking that Palin is on Barack's ticket. Or Roe vs. Wade was racial issue, etc.........
People don't have clue shouldn't vote unless they are informed of basic facts.

Not at all. Maybe not the best analogy but say, since it's hunting season do I want everyone out in the woods with a gun just because it's their right?
And, I guess I should retract the "young" part, it's not just them. In conversations with co-workers and customers over many years and many elections I am completely baffled by the reasons people vote for one candidate or the other, either party. Reasons that have nothing to do with the issues or stances.
My apologies for steering this thread off track guys.

Phew - I only watch MTV for the quality entertainment. I get my political inspiration from Fox news.
The whole point of voting is to vote - if you think the young generation is too stupid to make a good decision, raise the voting age. The way things are going, maybe we should restrict the voting age as older voters are less likely to listen to reason and ideas other than the ones they have ingrained in them.
The young voters of have more of a stake than older ones as they are going to be saddled with the bills and problems that older voters want "right now". The young or "inexperienced" vote has a lot to gain and lose at this time. They can choose to continue on Path A or choose Path B. We always say that young people are the future, lets let them decide what kind of world they want to live in. Let them decide regarding guns, a womans right to choose and what kind of diplomacy this country should have.
The people should decide the path the coutnry should take. If you look at young voters and how they vote as one demographic, lets split others and say they shouldnt vote.
African Americans will vote for so and so.
Christians will vote for so and so.
Jewish people will vote for so and so
The old will vote for so and so
The military will vote for so and so.
However either of the afforementioned groups collectively votes isnt right or wrong. Each individual of the sub-set has a right to choose. Comparing groups and how they vote does nothing...if it does, it only polarizes people and seperates instead of unites them. In essence it boils down to "anyone who is less intelligent than I will for for that idiot". In the end, let the chips fall where they should - where the people want them. The beauty of a tri-part government is that you can balance them out.
Vote for who you think is right and people wont have a problem with you. Its confidential.

Re: Remember to vote!!!!!!
Reading this thread reminds me of the conversation I had with a young woman the other day. She made it clear in our conversation that she would vote for so-and-so as Prez, thus cancelling my vote for the opponent. In our dialog, I asked her if she has been keeping up with the news and if she has truly looked at the background of each candidate and their qualifications.
She admitted that she watches little news, mostly listens to NPR while on the way to work. She said she's voting for this person because of their position on taxes alone. A friend who I fish with from time-to-time chose his candidate on their stand on health care, while another friend was more concerned about shipping jobs over-seas.
While it's a narrow view that shapes many people's decisions, it is their right to vote as they see fit. I do agree that everyone who votes SHOULD have a basic understanding of the issues, the candidates and the ramifications that may follow by supporting a particular candidate or proposition, but how in the heck can we develop a litmus test for every single voter in this country?
Flawed as it is, it beats the alternative. We can only hope that more people will take an interest and educate themselves to some degree and not be hearded like sheep to slaughter by slick talk and a media that has an agenda all it's own.
I don't disrespect anyone for not agreeing with my choices, I only ask that they make an informed choice of their own.
I too, apologize for the thread-jack.

Bloom,
To many people mark their ballots uninformed and out of emotion instead of what is actually best. I hope folks take time to think about the issues, measures and candidates carefully. Make the choice with your mind.

Re: Remember to vote!!!!!!
Don't let your TV tell you how to vote, please read the voter's pamphlet, you would be surprised how much good information is in there.

Re: Remember to vote!!!!!!
I made my mind up 24 years ago the first time I voted, who I won't vote for, the last 8 years reinforced my decision to who I won't vote for, I'm registered non party, the lesser of 2 evils has applied every time, dropped off my vote in the collecton box Tue.

Re: Remember to vote!!!!!!
There should be a test on politics .. if you pass the test you get to vote.
Things like who is your governor now, who were the last 4 presidents in correct order, Who is your congressmen?
If you don't know the basics you shouldn't have a voice. Another way to say it.. If you dont care who is in office now why should you care who the next one is.

[I dont get it...post marked by the 4th... Doesnt this essentially mean that voting by mail doenst matter since on the 5th we will know who the president will be?]
Alot of people don't get it. Your vote for president is not what elects the president. Popularity vote doesn't mean jack, it is the electoral college vote that is the deciding factor. All other issues and offices are decided by the people but not president.

Yes. Last Presidential election 1.3 million votes were not represented in the State of Washington. The other side had 1.5 million. All 11 electoral votes went to one side. All or nothing.
If the Electoral College is to continue, proportional voting should be applied IMO. I think that there are only two states that do this.

Re: Remember to vote!!!!!!
We had my 20, 22 and 24 yr old sons over for a nice halibut dinner tonight. After dinner we discussed each issue and candidate on the ballot and made our own decisions and voted. We agreed on some things and disagreed on others, but in the end, I know they made informed choices. I'll drop the ballots off at the library tomorrow.

Re: Remember to vote!!!!!!
Voted, and mailed last week.
Then last night on the way back to Orting from Hillsboro I saw a bill board that read something like this "Does your secret ballot have a barcode and serial number on it?" Took a couple of sec's but then the lightbulb went on

I believe that the barcode is to know how many voted and who voted. The actual ballot goes in a seperate envelope inside the one with the barcode and signature.
When the envelope gets to its destination, the outer envelope with the barcode gets scanned, opened and thrown out and the blank envelope with the ballot goes to wherever it goes.
I also think they compare signatures on the outer envelopes...but I am not sure. I think thats the process, but I have been wrong.

I thought McCain's concession speech was a class act. I respected him before, and even more so now.
