Default Ocean Conditions?

Ok, I have tried the search without success, I remember a thread about ocean conditions and a way to add to indicators and anything less then 10 is Ok.

Also, is there any fish at the CR buoy? Thinking about Saturday, the forcast doesn't look good but still thinking.

Use the NOAA forecast as an indicator of the worst conditions you can expect on any given day.

IE:
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PORTLAND OREGON

930 AM PDT WED JUL 23 2003

...SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY...
TODAY...N WIND 15 KT...RISING TO 25 KT IN THE AFTERNOON... WIND WAVES 5 FT. NW SWELL 8 FT AT 8 SECONDS.
TONIGHT...N WIND 25 KT...BECOMING NW 20 KT AFTER MIDNIGHT WIND WAVES 5 FT. NW SWELL 8 FT AT 7 SECONDS.
THU...NW WIND 25 KT... WIND WAVES 5 FT... NW SWELL 8 FT AT 7 SECONDS.
THU NIGHT...N WIND 15 KT... WIND WAVES 3 FT... NW SWELL 6 FT
FRI...NW WIND 15 KT... WIND WAVES 3 FT... NW SWELL 4 FT
FRI NIGHT...N WIND 15 KT... WIND WAVES 3 FT... NW SWELL 4 FT
SAT...NW WIND 20 KT... WIND WAVES 4 FT... NW SWELL 5 FT
SUN...N WIND 25 KT...EASING TO 15 KT... WIND WAVES 3 FT... NW SWELL 5 FT.

Notice the forecast for today, wind waves 5 ft, swell 8 ft. Not a nice day in my book. It adds up to 13!!!

The seconds between the swell matters too. The shorter that is, the steeper the waves become. 8 Seconds is pretty short, 6 or 7 seconds at those swell heights is a no go almost everytime.

At 10 seconds or more swell is lazy and slow moving even when pretty big (<6 ft).

This is a judgement call. I would be very concerned about bar crossing early in the day this weekend. Minus tides and low in the morning. You will go out early to the roughest bar of the day. It may not calm down until an hour after low.

Thanks Pilar,

I won't go if the swells add up to 10 or above, I will probably use the 10 second rule also. Great information.

Saturday doesn't look good yet, I will watch the forcast as it gets closer.

I usually wait until an hour after low tide to cross the bar and only cross on the flood tide going in and out.

So, by that, Friday may be the best day of the lot, depending on what the swell timing is??
