Default Major outboard repair (need input)

I am attempting some major repair of my Yamaha Outboard 1989 175ETXF
and I could use some input. The steering arm has bad corrosion and needs to be replaced as well as the pin that holds the ram to raise the motor and the entire lock assembly (that holds the motor up during transport) here are a few pictures of what I am dealing with.

The steering arm

the shaft that holds the feet for keeping the motor up and the pin that supports the ram to raise the motor

other than these parts the motor is in great shape and runs excellent!!!!
I have found all the parts I need on boats.net

I have the shop space and tools and mechanical ability to the job but I have never disassembled an outboard of this size before. I would like any first hand input on what this job entails and any special tools I may need to get it done? Any help is VERY much appreciated!!!!!!!!!

Is this a repair I should do myself or am I in over my head????

ANY input would be greatly appreciated

Does anyone know where I could get my hands on a tear down manual for this motor?

Cool Re: Major outboard repair (need input)

Go for it ... You can not break it any worse than any one else ...
By the looks of that motor be prepared to have fasteners corroded together and possibly if they are dissimilar metals to have to drill them out or re-thread components ... And be sure to really support the motor well when working on the lift ram ...
Good Luck ... Barney

Hoss, I agree with Barney.
It's quite clear where you use your motor----salt.
Like Barney said make sure it's supported, while
working on the pivot.
You have a major corrosion issue.

Yeah go for it. The worse that can happen is you'll HAVE to take it in. But if you can fix it yourself you'll be way ahead.

Good luck!!

I plan on pulling the motor with my cherry picker and building a stand to support it while I do the work. The chery picker will have to be the only thing holding it while I change the steering arm since the entire shaft the motor turns on will have to be removed as well.
I was hoping someone here has done this repair before and would be able to lend some insight?
