Default I\'ve been short shafted!

Okay, This was to be a simple installation of a thru-hull fitting.

On advice from fellow 'Dogs, I bored a 3/4in. hole through the transom of our boat; only to find out the theaded fitting I purchased is too short.

It's just flush on the inside of the transom. I can't even get the nut on it let alone screw the seacock on.

I guess they don't make boats like they used to either because I have looked at numorous web sites and stores and can not find a fitting long enough to go through the transom.

I have not tried Englunds yet but I'm beginning to think (READ HOPE!) this is a special order item.

We were discussing extending the shaft with a coupler if I could find a chunk of 3/4 brass pipe. Then drilling the hole ovsized to as close to the same diameter as the coupler to eliminate slop and then filling with 5200.

Last resort I guess I'll have to have one machined from brass.

Any thoughts?

Bummer, Fishplay! Last year I was putting in a thru-hull and I must've been bored because I actually read the instructions which advised that you not drill the 3/4" hole while the boat was in the water! Good luck with your fix.

Greg, I had a similar problem with the drains on my bait boxes. The transom is now doubled 3/4 marine plywood, all the way across. It was one sheet with a second partial right around the gimbal housing for the outdrive.

When I went to put the baitbox drains back in they were short. So I cut a 3" hole in the top sheet and installed the drain fitting in the middle of it. You just have to protect the exposed plywood and seal it from water exposure.

Bait live well>?

Greg,
Would it be possible to counterbore your hole on the inside?

Check boatfix.com - Perko has extra-long thru hull's up to 5" hull thickness. Go here - http://www.boatfix.com/bykeyword.ASP?keyword=thru+hull , you can then click on the red page numbers on the right to see the details of the parts.

I think I would gander over to Englunds, they just might have what you need in stock...they have alot of "odd sized" stuff.

fishplay - your supposed to put a thru hull thru the hull not the transom. It wouldn't work at planing speed anyway. The whole tramson is out of water.

You're going to have to remember to turn that thing on and off all the time now to avoid running it dry.

I'd plug that hole and put the thru hull in the proper place. Good luck !

Excellent Orca!

I looked at 6 pages of google search and never found one that had the extra long fittings.

Thank You!!

I will loose the strainer aspect of the one I originaly purchased and will spend three times as much, but that beats compromising the transom.

I do have an in line strainer installed on the system so I should be ok.

Thank you to all who replied. Well let me change that. Thank you to those with genuine replies.

How long does it need to be? I'll look into it or you can call my brother. He will know where to get one. 3/4" OD? 1/2" pipe?

Hawg Caller, Thanks very nice offer.

Keta, yes 3/4 OD 1/2 in pipe. If you don't come up with something up there that is 3.5" or longer I will check at Englunds Friday night. I'll trade you a ride to the fishin grounds for some help on Sunday.

Decided to fish Saturday and work on Rotsa Ruck Sunday. I need some thearpy.

I'm hoping Skein and Janice will join me for a rockpile run.
