Re: Rhino 120 problems....
Have you looked in you settings for a "timeout" feature? I'd give Garmin a call.

I think it did the first couple of times, now I don't think so. My buddy has it in his hands, sitting in the passenger seat in a truck on the way to Ukiah!

Re: Rhino 120 problems....
Your short term fix could be turning off the WAAS, when you get a chance go to garmins web site and download the newest firmware and it should work.
FYI this worked for me.

Re: Rhino 120 problems....
Very curious about this also. Had mine go TU on me day one of a six day hunt last week. It had performed flawlessly before that. I get about 2-3 minutes and then a horizontal line. My Dad was in camp and gave me his because he had recently upgraded. I still would like to be able to get my waypoints that I have saved off the old unit. When I get a little caught up and remember I will check out the Garmin site and see what they have to say.

Download all of the latest updates...this will enable the Waas capabilities and hopefully fix your software problems. This issue and others were in the first and second versions and are easily fixed with a five minute update. Go to Garmin website, download the updater feature and everything else is automatic. If it still continues send the unit to Garmin for repair, very short turn-around time.

Re: Rhino 120 problems....
I don't want to hijack this thread.... but since we're talking about Garmin service:
The talk buttom on my 530 has been sticking. Really annoying to be transmitting continuously. Also my screen will freeze and sometimes go blank.
What is the service process? I assume I can just call Garmin for help, just haven't had a chance.

Call 800-800-1020, Garmin does sponser this site on the Salty Dogs page.
If you have had your unit less than a year they will take care of you.
You just pay to ship it to them.

On my Garmin you have to punch another key or it shuts down in 5 seconds.

Re: Rhino 120 problems....
Really weird to see this thread. This buck hunt, I started getting the horizontal line across the screen. I found out that if I take the battery out, then put it back, it resets the unit and I can start it back up again. I seem to only have the issue if I leave the GPS on for more than a few minutes. I can turn it on, get my bearings, then turn it off. This is a short term fix for the field. Now that I see the suggestions on this thread for downloading the updates, I'll try that before elk season. Thanks for the ideas.

My 520's screen will go blank every once in a while? I'm assuming that's the same issue you guys are speaking of?
I can turn it off then it will turn back on and work fine again sometimes for minutes and sometimes for days....

For mine it seems to have the grey screen problem when I set it to 5 watt, if I run 2 watt it doesn't do it as much... It will blank out for some reason. I'm about the junk the thing and buy the new 530 Hcx...

You don't loose any information when you update the firmware. No worries about loosing your waypoints.

Re: Rhino 120 problems....
The early 530 had some issues that could be taken care of through the downloads. Everyone with a rhino or Gps units, should occasionally check for updates of any kind. This may fix glitches that occur when the original software is written or new is added. These updates will also typically open up more usable functions as they are added. The updates may make mapping more accurate as well. Some of the early 530's may need to be sent to Garmin for replacement or repair but you will not know until you update the firmware in the unit. Typical usage is on all of the time, with consistent use through out the day. You should not have to reset the unit by removing the power source....something is not correct.
Make sure the batteries are fresh and all updates are current before you depend on the unit in the field.

Re: Rhino 120 problems....
Both my sons and my rino's do exactly that, go blank and have horizontal lines. Will restart after disconnecting batteries but does it again.Ours are 2 yrs. old and have done the update once. What a piece of junk with this many users having the same problem. I will be contacting garmin . How would you go about doing an update if it won't stay on long enough to update?

Re: Rhino 120 problems....
Thats a good question about keeping the unit on. Typical downloads take less than 2-3 minutes depending on download speed. One option is to save the download to your computer, and then do the hook-ups to the gps and hit download. This should take less than 1-2 minutes, again depending on computer.
You could also e-mail or call Garmins tech support....they are very helpfull and professional....and in some cases not too far away from PDX.
The rhino is a very powerfull, fun, and safe "tool". Uploading and downloading maps is very valuable information when gathering hunting info, this includes occasionally checking for updates on line. If you own a gps (Garmin) down load the updater tool....then it becomes plug and play after that...you dont have to look for the model or software to update...it is all done for you.

My 530Hcx started doing that. It was a bad on/off switch fit. The glue on the rubber covering the antana started to come loose. causing the button to stick in the rubber boot. Sent it in and got a new one as it was still under warintee.
