Default Poor man's TUNA!

I have learned alot from my friend and mentor 'Puffin'. We may not always agree and I have learned not to take his assessment of Ocean conditions at face value ..... but he's a clever guy and if you watch closely you might learn something.

Like how to use a heavy 9' rod as an outrigger with a handine on it.

Like how to study a chart of the ocean and figure out where to fish for the really big Halibut. Picture Big Jon, his face just inches from the chart, eyes squinted almost shut, Cigar smoke curling up to the ceiling and he stabs his finger at the chart ....

"Right There!!!!!"

You can make a damned effective tuna lure with a 4" hootchie and a 1/2 ounce egg sinker. The color we used was nuclear green and white. One hootchie, put the sinker inside the head and thread it on the leader. This lure was very effective on the Julie Rose III last Saturday.

Your mileage may vary but you could buy a whole pile of hootchies for what a handful of Zukers cost.

John...that is SO TRUE! I started trying fishing for salmon last week out of PC with alum foil and a bare hook on a diver. At 20 pulls, strike everytime. I have tried the old hoochie on a sinker trick for tuna.....and you're right they tag it every time. I carry a handfull of those cheap little suckers on the BLACK ROCKET as my SAVE A TUNA FISHIN TRIP KIT!

Hmmmm.... I think I've seen those hoochie rigs somewhere before!

PS- Englund Astoria has hex heads and bullet heads. They are loose in a box so you gotta have your own skirts. $4.50 a head, ouch!

Or use two hootchies, 1 6" with egg sinker, then slide a 4" up behind it with a smaller egg sinker. The lime greenw/pink panties is a Dorado killer. Stack them for diff. color combos.

I absolutely tore up the skipjack down in Cabo with a hootchie and lead insert.

Pilar & Salty Dogs - many thanks again for the knowledge and information you share. I dont get out for Tuna enough but my "Tuna Tackle" has just tripled. I have been carving some cedar to make plugs and working on developing a feather skirt or plastic skirt. The eggsinker and hoochie sounds faster and cheaper.
