Default 45/70-tell me about your kills with this round please.

Bought one for a cab/brush gun and can't wait to use it. Thanks!

I shot a Bull last year with my guide gun. 405gr JSP @1800fps. I suppose I shouldn't bother posting this in Long Range Hunting, but I took my Elk at 18 yards. Flattened him. I mean one step, plop, no wiggle. The bullet expanded out to 1".

In 05 my oldest brother and I took my dad on a guided bear hunt in California. We all three killed bears with a 45-70, my dad and I used a Winchester 45-70 and my brother used an old single shot and I stood by with the Winchester to help if the bear needed another round.

My dad did up some hand loads for the Winchester that were hot but my brother used factory loads out of his old rifle.

My dad shot the first bear behind the shoulder; it took about 20 seconds for the bear to die and fall.

My brother killed the next bear after passing on a few smaller bears. He shot his bear in the neck and it dropped like a rock.

My bear did not go so peacefully, he was fighting with the dog and growling at us as we approached the tree. He went about 25’ up when we got there so the guide tried to round up the dogs but the bear decided to make a run for it. I yelled he coming down and the guide fell backwards yelling shoot it. It was happening to fast and with too many branches to pick a good shot. My best shot was in the shoulder as the bear was about to leap to the ground. My shot hit hard and the bear fell facing me, I was ready for my next shot but didn’t want to shot the bear in the head and ruin the skull. I waited a split second and the bear turned to run and I drilled him in the neck. The bear then slid 200 yards down the hill on snow to the creek in the bottom. The guide was on his back and did not see the second shot and was extremely worried about his dogs. I tried to assure him that the bear was dead but we moved very quickly down the hill to make sure it was all over.

The 45-70 has always been one of my favorite rounds, I would have no problem using it on other big game critters.

My 45/70 Guide model (stainless) is a coyote killing machine, 5 kills to date!!! Dead on at 100 yds with open sites. I plan to deer hunt with it.

I've always been a fan of the old straight-walled cases. Several years ago I picked up a Ruger #1 in .38-55. With that strong action I can load it up a long way over factory stuff. I shoot a 255 gr. Barnes/39 gr. IMR 3031 at 2240 fps. Do the math and its more zing than a factory .30-06/180 gr.. Once I found the right bullet I was set. Have killed 4 deer with it. Its a pleasure to hunt with, but I need to put a scope on it because the old eyes can't see the open sights too good.

I know a guy that used a marlin .45-70 and said it kicked too hard to shoot more than a couple of times. He was a big guy so probably didn't give too much, but I'm sure a skinny or smaller person could handle it much better than him.

Nice, thanks fellas! I plan on using my 300wsm for my main elk rifle. Then, mid-day I will walk the timbers with the guide gun. It's a standard marlin blued traditional. Can't wait. I love lever guns. It is so short and easy to hike with as well. Plan on keeping her in the cab with me and close by at camp.

Nice!

1886 Winchester's (John Browning's first Lever rifle design for Winchester) in .45-70 (and also in .45-90 BP) has been killing 'em for 122 years now!

I simply love my 1895G Marlin. It is blues and very easy to handle on the coast range. Perfect for sloppy rainy days in the woods. The only mod I have done in the past years of owning it (bought it when they introduced the guide model) is replacing the stock sites with the XS ghost ring system. I suggest that it is the best mod one can make. Next mod might be an enlarged lever loop, my hands do not fit the loop well with gloves but that is another day. BTW, it works well on blacktail and elk for sure!

One of my buddies shot a buck that was quartering away from him with a ruger #1 .45-70. It removed the rib cage from the port side of the deer. I was very impressed. Ever since then I've been looking around for a marlin .45-70 guide gun.

Hunted Caribou, up out of Kotzebue Alaska. Came out of creek bottom, walking the lower ridge line. spotted a nice Bou with good C-Rack 85 yards out. Racked a Round into my Browning 1886 45.70 lever gun. Looked over the buck horn sight.. BOOM Swaaack. Hmm.. gone.. Walked over.. Dropped like a rock.

Hit 2" above aim point in the shoulder spine. Then the Long Butchering, in Griz country. Back to spike camp, Loaded it all up in the Piper super Cub. back to Kotzebue.

Elk hunting in Sumpter unit. Cow elk, 40 yards out. Bad angle.. waited 100 yards. Waited.. ugh.. back to about 60 yards. BOOOM.. Flop. Bullet pass through. Cow dropped on impact. Same rifle.

Rest of group is hunting with sharps, Same day, buddy using .45-70 with soft lead. Had Cow elk quartering away. Fired, Glanced a small Tree. Blew the front shoulder, elk Ran up hill. Racked in another Round, 100 yards lined up the elk, It ran behind a Rotten Log. BOOM... Through the Rotten Log, Center Mass shot.. FLop. Bullet still did a pass through... Impressive. The lawdogs in our group did a Replay of bullet travel. Nice hole in log... WOW.

.45-70 is a impressive round. We do long range shooting with that round. For game..
One shot one Kill!.

With the right ammo this gun is dead on up to 150yds and I would not hesitate to take a 200yd shot. It is a great brush gun and you cannot hurt it! It is a great weapon to pack on a horse as well.

Millions of missing buffalo should be all the testimony you need for this old round plus I think its one of the few that has never been out of production since it was introduced.

The 45/70 is not just about what you've killed though........is it? At least not for me. I just wanted one . Some of you know what I'm talking about, don't you...?

When I moose (Alces alces) hunted in Finland .45-70 was the gun I used all during high-school. Hunts there aren't like hunting much of the time, mostly it's just killing for meat. You have a bunch of people walk through the brush making noise and some guys on the road waiting for the moose to run out then "bang, flop", go get the tractor and haul another one back to camp. A bunch of the guys had .45-70's besides for just myself. I never saw a moose hit with one go more than 30 or 40 yards tops before keeling over dead as a stone.
