Cool Re: Slow Boat

Have you checked the prop bushing to see if it is stripped ? ...

Is the carb opening all of the way?

Is the trailer still under the boat?

I'll throw in a couple of suggestion...

First off - with the boat in Neutral - can you Rev up the motor above 3000 rpms? If not your throttle linkage could be not opening your carb enough.

Second - are you getting enough fuel? Check fuel filter for blockage, check for water in the filter. You can also borrow a fuel pressure gauge from a local auto parts store to check your pressure. (Always have a fire extinguisher On-Hand!!)

Third - just to cover the other things - check each cylinder for correct pressure. This will ensure that you haven't sucked a value on a cylinder. Last year I sucked a value on my 4.3 liter and it would only go about 10 mph.

Might want to check your air intake to make sure some critter hasn't blocked it off. Also I would follow Lundman's suggestion on the compression checks. Did it run okay before the rebuild? If so, then something is not correct on either the rebuild or the installation/setup. The compression check will confirm the rebuild part, or most of it. Also make sure you have the right prop on it for the boat and motor. If you had work done to it, stranger things have occurred than getting the wrong prop back.

Is the prop damaged or has it been changed recently?

I agree with Lundman.
Something is keeping the linkage from working.

went out crabbing last weekend, I can get alittle over 4000 rpms in neutral, in gear 3000, but runs the same at 2500.

2 different people suggested there could be water collected in the hull.

That certainly is a possibility ...

I had a similar problem this summer ended up being a blocked fuel filter.
No fuel no power. Without a load it seemed just fine. In gear was another story.
Also the linkage is somethign to look at. This is a common issue with cars and engine installs.
let us know what you find out.
Good luck.

If it is fuel flow, a bypass to a can of clean fuel will answer the question. If it is linkage, try disconnecting the linkage and opening the throttle by hand. Good luck, boats are great when they work, and frustrating when they dont.
