I am planning a trip to Pacific City soon. I need advice on fishing ideas or crabbing. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Pacific City
I can answer any specific question regarding Pacific City Fisheries. It's pretty much the only place I fish with exception of the Columbis River in Winter........ What are you interested in catching.......

Re: Pacific City
The crabing has been good in the bay. Just go down near the Jaws at low slack and crab the incoming tide. Avoid the lower bay during the ebb tide.
If you can get out the Ocean fishing is hot. Not much fishing in the bay until the middle of August when the Fall Chinook start to show up.

Re: Pacific City
joe, How is the bar at Pacific City and is it as easy as Newport? I just gotta get into the big blue this weekend, somewhere. Expecially if the ocean is hot to trot and full of coho and nooks.
Does the changing tides make much difference there? Thanks

Re: Pacific City
My .02
My advice is do not attempt Nestucca or any unimproved bar crossings .
Yes, I know it can be done. I have done it myself.
I have seen rogue waves here as well as Salmon River, Alsea, Nehalem, Netarts, and Garibaldi.
It is basicaly thrillseeking activity for even the most experienced captains.

Re: Pacific City
Flay play is exactly right. If you do not have the proper boat, and safety equipment crossing the bar...well there is no bar, actually you follow the river to the end and then you take on breakers and lots of them and big ones!
I have been over that bar 15 or 20 times this year alone and I knot up everytime going out there.
Your best option (and safest) is to consider equipment (weather and dory, inflatable, or flat bottom boat) and beach launching. It also takes some skill but becuase of the cove there, the surf is usually very light or non-existant.
And the fact is the fishing there right now is SUPER HOT and I mean hot.
So hot I have been experimenting with the Salmon to see just what they'll bite. And they will bite ANYTHING, even an bare hook with Aluminum Foil! Yes that's my lastest.
If you go to Pacific City, be sure to take in the dory launching and retreval. This will give you a 1st hand idea the safest way to fish Pacific City.

Re: Pacific City
Thanks guys, I have been convinced not to cross at Pacific City. However, the beach sounds like a ciable choice. Is there someone there that assist with the launch? I have been there on time about 20 years ago and a guy with a tractor was launching boats and loading them up when they return. Do they still do this so the trucks are not all stuck in the sand and left as fish habitat? I would try it if there is help. I have a 19' NRiver and pretty easy to launch. How do they get them turned around without taking on water over the transom?
Verrrry Interestingggg?

Re: Pacific City
Sorry Snapshot if I misled you. I was talking about getting out in a dory off the beach if you own one or can bum a ride. Or hire Capt Kujo and go thru the mouth with him. As was mentioned the mouth of the river is very shallow and dangerous.
No tractor or anybody to help launch on the beach unless you can talk a Doryman into helping. I do have a few friends who launch sleds off the beach but I have yet to try it with mine. If there is any surf to speak of you will take a wave over the transom before you get turned around. Then there is the problem of getting your boat back on the trailer when you get in. I have given it alot of thought but I just drive to Depoe Bay or Garibaldi. I mostly fish with my kids and I really like the idea of the Coast Guard being just a few minutes away.

Re: Pacific City
Pacific city is one of those places that, if you gotta ask you shouldn't be there. It appears from your profile you have a modified v-sled.
First- the reason they launch off the beach is it's safer than the "bar", second NO one will make it in a vee hull sled. Well- cept KUJO but he's not a mortal human! Get my sword Conner!

Re: Pacific City
Thanks for all the concern and I promise I love a good challenge but I think the Launch at either spot is out of the question for me.
I really was looking forward to hitting that area where they are so thick I could use a bare hook or tin foil as bait. I agree with the concept, get something in front of them and they will hit it out of instinct. I just never get to where there is enough of them to test that on.
I will try Nehalem tomorrow, frop some crab pots and take a look at that bar and maybe back to Newport on Friday or Saturday.
thanks again to all of you and I have great respect for all of you as you are on the water a whole lot more than me.
Does Capt, Kujo and Miss B run charter boats? Seems like both of you are on the water a lot?

Re: Pacific City
Capt. Kujo, Does anyone use sit-on-top kayaks off the beach at Pacific City? I would be interested in trying this if it would be feasible. I understand that the surf would dictate the feasibility of this endeavor on a daily basis, but would it be possible if the surf is right? I would probably hire a guide for one day, just to launch off the beach. I've heard about this technique for a long time and have always wanted to try it. Thanks for any info.....sal

Re: Pacific City
Salmurai, I'm not an expert on Pacific City like the others but from what I've seen you'd have no problems launching a kayak. There is a small protected cove that seems to keep the swells out coming from the NW.
Just my opinion. I'm hoping to launch my newly acquired dory there, possibly this week if I can get some directions from folks on where the fish are. Not worried about finding salmon or tuna but would like to figure out where the hali's are located.
Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Re: Pacific City
Corrirod,
Halibut fishing was excellent this weekend. We got two keepers and heard of at least 5 others between 4 boats. Head West-Southwest looking through the keyhole on the rock from the beach, to about 175 feet. The drift usually runs to the south east. Reset your drift at 145 feet or there abouts.... Good luck...

Re: Pacific City
Thanks for the info Kujo and Doryfisher. Are you guys going out of PC on Friday or Saturday this week? If so I'd love to join you. Well, at least join Doryfisher because Kujo will leave me in about 2 seconds with the Black Rocket!
I'll give you a call tomorrow Kujo in regards to the dory association. I'd love to join.

Please email me I would be happy to share what info I can on the area with you.... Congrats on becoming a doryman.
