6 HP 4-stoke??? Help???
Welp...That time has finally come...I need a smaller (portable) 4 stroke outboard. In the long shaft.
I'm looking at the:
Nissan: 6hp 4 strk, 55lbs @ 1200.00
Merc: 6HP 4stk, 50lbs @ 1,400.00
Honda: 6HP 4 stk (2 cyl) @ 81 lbs 1,600.00
The Yamaha looks nice but it's too heavy.
Any input AND dealer/private party you thought was on the level.
Thanks in advance.

Re: 6 HP 4-stoke??? Help???
I don't know where you got your data, but you had better recheck it!
Honda does not make a 6hp 4-stroke. 5hp 1 cylinder and 8hp 2 cylinder that weighs 98lbs.
Mercury and Nissan's 6hp are both 1 cylinder. They are light but I wouldn't buy a 1 cylinder kicker.
Only the Yamaha 6hp is 2 cylinder, it is 83lbs and in my opinion, the best choice in 6hp.
In 8hp, the Nissan is only 81lbs so that may be a good choice too.

Re: 6 HP 4-stoke??? Help???
Andy...I usually don't post but you are considering spending a lot of cash and will offer you a short cut to satisfying fishing time. All I can tell you is that the 4 strokes are heavy vs 2 stroke. That being said the advantages are several. 1 NO SMOKE! 2 NO Noise! 3 no oil to mix. 4 regular unleaded gas.
I have owned at least a dozen different trolling motors($$$$) in my 50 years and I bought a 8hp Yamiha 3 years ago for my 20' North River. It is the best period. I'm considering a 6hp for a smaller boat kicker. With all the goodies on the 8hp...power trim & electric start it is way too heavy to be portable, at least for me. Other than packing the 6hp, the weight would be fine on most boats. At the end of the day the extra 20 to 25 lbs doesn't mean alot. You just need to drink all the beer and eat all the food you bring or carry a few less sinkers. Once you own a quaulity 4 stroke you will never change back to a 2. 3 year warrenty and I've never used it. It has NEVER died once in 3 years. Its a no brainer.

Re: 6 HP 4-stoke??? Help???
I just picked up an 8hp 4-stroke honda. The thing only has 1 hour on it. Can't wait for it's maiden voyage sat. I've only heard good things about them. all 4-stroke are very heavy in realion to 2-stroks, but the benefits far outweight the amount of weight.

Re: 6 HP 4-stoke??? Help???
I don't know much about kickers or four strokes so I'm looking to get educated on this.
ET - Why wouldn't you buy a 1 cylinder kicker?
Thanks,
Dale

Re: 6 HP 4-stoke??? Help???
Andy - I have a Honda 7.5 HP 4 stroke long shaft that I might be willing to part ways with for considerably less money than new. Give me a call at 503-358-4446 if you are interested.

Re: 6 HP 4-stoke??? Help???
Andy -
I went thru the search last year and decided on the T8 from Yamaha. Best one out there IMHO.
Quite, Turns way down, Regular Fuel, No smoke. Power Tilt, Elec Start options available. Starts every time. What a pleasure running this thing. Oh yea I also added the trollers buddy, TR 1 Gold
my 2 cents

Re: 6 HP 4-stoke??? Help???
CLS - That's right, they vibrate. They run fine and they are light but 2 cylinder is the way to go for a kicker. 2 cylinders mean a balanced motor and potentially easier starting.
When weight is an issue, it is tough to beat the 83lb 6&8hp Yamahas although recently I have heard good things about the 81lb Nissan 8hp.
Once you move up to 9.9hp, virtually all the manufacturers have good quality 2 cylinder motors.

GR8Waves,
I am also looking at picking up a motor in that size range. If you really want to sell it, can you e-mail me the specifics ( year, condition etc.)
Here is my email address.
Thanks

Re: 6 HP 4-stoke??? Help???
I have a 6 hp 4 stroke, and like the guys above said, it vibrates like crazy. I really wish I'd gotten the 2 cylinder.

Re: 6 HP 4-stoke??? Help???
Thanks for filling me in on the vibration aspect of single cylinders.
I was clueless.
