Fish cleaning contest ....
I had a thought about 1/2 way through the fish we caught last Saturday ....
What if we held a fish cleaning contest? We could get some of the guys that want to go catch a tuna and some of the guys who run boats and need crew together. The prizes could be for cleanest/fastest or easiest method or whatever.
Think of what it would be like to come into Depoe and unload your 10 fish. The competition would be in progress and while you clean up your boat .. the fish you caught would be getting carked and packed in ice. The best prospective new fisher would get to go out on a future trip, friends would be made, people would share the catch and so on and so on.
Popeye .. first prize .. a trip on the Julie Rose III?

Re: Fish cleaning contest ....
Great idea Pilar - this could be followed by an "effective gaffing" class.

I will not be eligible as an instructor in the 'Gaffing seminar'. Don't ask me how I know this.
And maybe a 'Carking Management' workshop. This for fishers who can't stop carking.

Hi, my name is Nancy and I'm a Tunaholic.
My last tuna consumption was 5 minutes ago. I ate a jar of canned tuna. I'm sorry I just couldn't myself.
I'd be willing to donate a trip out on Sea Jypzee as a prize here. I'm tired of carking tuna. My hands are still sore.

Re: Fish cleaning contest ....
UMMM, sounds fishy to me.
I once got some neighbor kids in a "weed pulling contest" in our yard.
Biggest weed, most in two minutes etc...My mom won't let me forget that one. She knew I had a future in sales.
Good luck on your "contest" Pilar.

Re: Fish cleaning contest ....
Pretty funny thread here. No experience necessary. Here's proof.
Saturday I made (yet another) run to Englund's for jewelry, and found myself at Depoe in the afternoon just in time to meet with Gregotis and crew, along with Team D'Oh Boys. The Dopey carking house was backed up so we made a run for Newport.
I slipped into my suit of armor (rubber bibs actually), borrowed a knife and remembering what Threemuch had told me and the exhibition I got from a commercial guy, set about showing the boys how it's done. They watched me as I made my circumference cuts, pulled the skin, did the lateral line cuts, and ran my hands down the loins loosening them from the carcass.
When I had it done, I looked gleefully at them and said, "That's one."
They thought I meant one for the day. Soon, however, they got it. The "one" represented my entire career.
Gotta start somewhere....
I'd like to thank the Pillsbury Pilots for sending me home with some fresh loins. Had 'em for dinner last night. Oh, baby.

Re: Fish cleaning contest ....
Ok I game for this! I have been lurking over here on the salty side watching all the tuna action trying to figure how to beg my way out to catch tuna.
This would be my first attempt at tuna, But how hard can it be? I mine at least I would get to practice on what 50 or so! Right.
Let me know when and where and I will hope I can make it down. If I have at least a day notice I can make it during the week.
I would even be willing to go out and do all the dirty work so I could see how it's done.
My name is Steve and I want to be a tunaholic!!!!
I'm tired of having to buy Tuna off the docks.
(if someone has an open seat I'm more than willing to pay my way.) (And still clean the fish and the boat and your tow vehicle)
See what you guy's have done! I haven't even caught one and I'm hooked.

Re: Fish cleaning contest ....
No, don't ask Pilar why he doesn't qualify as an instructor for the "effective gaffing" course... ask any of his crew - particularly DipSeaDiver.
Skein - congrats on your first successful TUNA! carking.
Psssst! Small Fry, here's what you do... go down to Depoe Bay on Saturday, around noon and when a tuna boat pulls in, get all excited (but try not to drool), stroke the skipper's ego by complimenting his/her skills at finding the fish. Help them haul their catch. Watch them clean for a little while then offer up that you're happy to help if they'll show you how they want it done. It is acceptable to excuse yourself to don protective clothing and fetch your fillet knives from your rig. Soon, you'll likely have new friends!
Ask Bug Flicker (Aka Mr. Clean Shirt)... he'll tell ya all about it.

What are friends for?
I'm guessing that Dipseadivers fish has met it's end many times over. I just got the first 3 lives trying to gaff it.
Oh, wait, I got it! It's an intiation ritual ... Yeah that's it, that's the ticket!

That gaffing thing you are talking about, is starting to sound like golf. You know where you take a few practice swings first!

Re: Fish cleaning contest ....
Ok, Pilar
I'll would love a chance to cark some TUNA! I've been known to clean and fillet a few carcasses. It would be fun to do some "Speed Carking". Anyone else up for it? Keta?, Skein?

Re: Fish cleaning contest ....
I use to think was pretty good with a gaff. Then I tried something other than a hayhook style. So..... how do you practice with a "regular gaff"?? The 100,000+ bales of hay I've moved didn't seem to help much.
