Default Slaughter on the water

Yesterday I went out of Ilwaco with Ramstrong and Fishonper for some salmon fishing. Left the dock at 5:30 and were fishing by 6:00. Bar was fine for a change but the ocean came up during the advance to the low tide. Fished near the CR bouy out in the channel.

Ended the day with three nice little nooks from 8 to 15lbs and 3 respectable coho.

I did manage one 220 lb hook up yesterday and got the sucker aboard. ME! While trying to unhook a mini-me chinook it spun around and put the top hook in the top of my middle finger and said "how'd that feel". Ouch!!!!!!!! Even though it was a barbless hook I could not back it out. Had Perry cut the hook and I used a pair of pliers to run it on through. Bandaid in place we continued to fish and slay fish.

Over 50 hookups on the day. Lots of small fish yet. I did notice that these fish were not gorged on much of anything. Tummies were pretty empty. Anyone else notice this? Kind of weird for this time of year.

Thanks for going guys. Pleasure to fish with ya.

Oh yeah, Did anyone find Fishonper 's rod and reel out there?? Seems a nice size coho had a better hookset than he did.

You guys are really putting a hurt to them across the CR bar. What is the average size of the cohos and does the bite taper off when the sun climbs in the sky? I noticed out of Newport that about 9:30 or so the bite has been tapering off, at least for me. I'll be hitting her Saturday for the morning flood. You guys fishing?

sounds like fun.

To bad you hooked into the carp, Ramstrong should have thrown it over the side.

Another way to remove the hook, is first cut off the finger at the knuckle, then you can wiggle the hook around all you want trying to free it without causing any additional pain to the finger owner.

We had a great day also just short of the CR. C & E I did notice that the fish seemed empty as we had run out of bait to get our last one we cut open all the fish and used a piece of bait and a hoochie to get our 6th one.Last week bait was falling out of the silvers. The fish sure are getting big. Had a 14# pounder yesterday. How long was that 8# nook we have been able to get a legal sized nook yet out there. Lots of 22 24 inchers.

We only had one exceptional coho come to the boat on my rod but he popped loose before a net could take him. Most of the fish are smallish at best right now. Not seeing or hearing of any really large nooks on the bite. Heard on the radio that one boat did get a 45lbr.

I will be back out there Saturday. Kind of hoping a tuna trip will materialize but if not the salmon will get the hurt put on them again by the Cindy Lou.

Mini-me.... Actually, I think Ryan was about to faint when he saw that hook in my finger. Sure was an unwanted piercing. The worst part is that when holding a utincel correct to eat (not the way Roy does it) the darn thing rests right across the top of the wound. Oh well, carp-edeum right?

C&E are you going deep for your nooks or are you getting them on top.

Looks like its going to get windy out there

C & E,

I've been commercially fishing off of Tillamook Head the last week. Go find a slick out in deeper water and you'll find the big fish. 220-300ft.+ of water and 80-120 ft. down. Fished in 200 ft. NW of Till.Head and had non-stop coho's but most were small. The farther out, the bigger the fish got. Landed a 50, couple of 40's, and some 30's for nooks, and landed some coho in the upper teens.

Anyway, just FYI.

Thanks bernie, I had a great time. I didn't almost faint, but the hook was in there pretty well. I told Bernie the story about me burying a treble in my calf to help him feel better. And since I've got an Iron gut, I was elected for all of the trips to the cabin to retrieve medical supplies.

Yeeha the little one (mine) was 26 1/4" Then Bernie's was 28 and Perry's was 31. They came from between 7 and 25 pulls. It's a rare day when everyone on the boat gets their nooks. All of the coho were in the 24-28" range. There are a lot of 20" and smaller coho out there. Hopefully they'll have some size to them when the get up here.

Thanks Corrirod. I suspect that would have happened here too. But the swells were getting a tad bigger than I liked around mid morning so I was just waiting out the bar to lay down a bit so we could get our fish and head in.
We found what you said to be true last year. Just need a little nicer day up here to venture out a little further.

As far as how deep we were going we were using just plain divers with flashers anywhere from 6 to 25 pulls down. We were having fish chase baits clear to the boat. Fishonper even had two coho on at a time on a mooch rig if we saw what was happening correctly. That was interesting.

Hoping for better ocean conditions this coming weekend.

Ramstrong those are great eaters aren't they. We had one yesterday I probably should have measured, but we had measured 3 one day that all were .5 to 1" short. I know its tough on them to hook-em net-em and then measure them and have to let them go. I'm sure your right they will be good size next month Good job to you guys!

All I can say is it was a good thing we had the smelling salts on board. Actually it is healing up real nice thanks to Iron Gut Ryan for getting my med kit from down below. Cant wait for this weekend. Hope the weather calms down over there.
