My day at Newport (7/20)
After a long day Saturday with the family sight seeing at Mt. St. Helens I decided at 8:30pm to head to Newport on Sunday. I called newbie ifisher fortywinks (and wife) and said lets go.
We hit the ramp at South Beach at 7:00am. Headed west to 150 feet of depth and dropped the gear. By 10:00am we had a couple of silvers in the box and was feeling pretty good. Hey we've never fished out here before so we were learing as we went. Water was nice and greasy due to no wind. Swell was may 4 to 6 feet but there was a long time between them. We continued to troll west and hit a few more fish, mostly nates. At about 200 feet of depth we found a honey hole and trolled in a half to one mile circle and kept banging fish. The last two fish were nooks. One maybe 16lbs and the other scaled at 33lbs  at the cleaning station.
We fished between 10 and 15 pulls using coyote spoons and hoochies. Our best rig was speckled glow in the dark hoochie on 20" of leader behind a dodger with a hunk of herring.
At the end of the day we brought 14 salmon to the boat, kept 4 coho's and 2 nooks for three rods and had more than 2 dozen take downs. We were back at the dock at 1:30pm.
What a day! And for a change I was fishing the big pond out of my own boat.

Thanks for the ride WaterDog. Great family fun on a great ocean day. It was tough to go back to work today.

Re: My day at Newport (7/20)
Don't sell the sled just buy a second boat. Everyone should be boat poor.
Nice job Rich. A great introduction for a new guy.

Re: My day at Newport (7/20)
Nice job on the Salmon hunt. Who need B-10 when we got this kind of action a lot closer. We have had a some really killer trips lately boating quite a few nooks. I hear ya on the sled issue. I have tossed the around a lot lately. I had a potential buyer but I dropped the ball cause I still have a place in my heart for her. We just bought a new house and renting our other one out so at this point financially, the two boat option is not an option.
What to do

Re: My day at Newport (7/20)
As much as I have thought about it, I'm keeping my sled. I hope to have it paid for in 3 years. Back when I got started with all this boat business I made the mistake of getting rid of a boat that I wish I could get back. If I had kept it I'd have a TUNA!/Halibut/saltwater boat now. But you know what they say about hindsight.
Besides I already have two boats so why not a third.

Re: My day at Newport (7/20)
Boys, I just sold my Jetcraft, a nicer boat than I ever thought I would own, so I could float a blue water boat like my Ed Wing. It was not an easy decision, but the lure of the big briney and the multitude of fisheries available pushed me over the limit.
Fishplay is right, though. Keep your current boat and buy the new one. A guy can't have too many boats. Or, as Janis put it, "Your next wife can help you make the payments...."
Just kidding. If you look at her posts, you'll see that she ends them with the mantra "Weld, Ed, weld!"

Re: My day at Newport (7/20)
With intentions of doing tuna at some point,I took a few friends out Sat and thought we would go for a couple Coho on the way. Left the dock at 6:00am (NP). Dropped 3 lines in at 165 ft NW of the jaws. At 11:30 decided to call it a day. Had 11 salmon on board ranging from 26" to 42" (no scales). 3 coho, 8 nooks all smaller fish were fin clipped including the nooks. We ran a diver...2ft...flasher....2ft....hoochie with a chunk of herring. Started at 6 to 8 pulls and as the day went on ended at 12 to 15 pulls. Color seemed to make no difference. Most fish were caught in 195ft to 205ft. At least as many fish were lost and 3 natives released. The larger nooks had 4" to 5" anchovies in their bellies. Guess the tuna will be another day and will be awhile to beat this one. Mon am 2 of us ran out and got 4 more small nooks.......same place...... same method......back at the dock by 10:30.
