Default Odfw....Unit info

Kinda somthing i have been wondering. Does odfw track and chart were elk herds are in the controlled hunt units to give a more accurate count on what the cow to bull ratio is, or how do they keep track besides the hunter surveys they do at the end of each season. Thanks

They do field surveys...on foot, vehicle and through the air.

I do believe they track the locations on some of the surveys, especially the spotlight surveys, but I don't know if they will give out that information freely. It could be viewed as a public record and thus you would have a right to it, but it would probably be interesting to see the hoops you would have to jump through.

I just got off the phone with the head biologist for the ochoco unit. He gave me some interesting info about how they track and monitor elk movement and herd counts and cow to bull ratio.

It is very interesting how they do it but not accurate. An educated guess on numbers there are no exact counts at all. I will have to talk with my friend who work at the odfw to get the details. I think the harvest reporting will help with the numbers.
