Report from Newport.

My friend bagged a 38-pound chinook in 70 feet of water south of the jaws this morning. He said he saw a bunch of working birds and just trolled that direction -- caught numerous sea bass as well trolling a hoochie and plug.

good luck.

Have a 19' bayliner openbow and plan to go out of newport in the am. Have gone out several times in past. Only problem I have had is with the wind. Don't anticipate any problems, but if I feel uncomfortable I don't force it!

Careful out there, reeljoy. Do you have a cover for your open bow? That can help a bunch but I've also heard of a good wave over the bow popping the snaps.

Too bad they can't do some sort of self baling bow on these boats, like the aluminum ones have.

Good luck.

Thanks Phil Layer for the warning! Do have a bow cover. I wish they had self bailing on this boat, just have to keep an eye on what I'am doing. Always extra careful, never have the need to push it. We can always find something in the bay.

Default Newport in the morning

With the small exchange on the tides should I expect any problems with crossing the bar in the morning?

As always, I appreciate any advice.

Thanks,

Live report from the 'Julie Rose III'

" the ocean has been absolutely flat all morning. It just started to blow a little about noon."

Thanks Popeye. I think concerns about Newport bar are minimal for tomorrow. This is one of the few bars on the coast that I do not worry about very much.

Your points about ebb tide and the size of the tide exchange are well taken. I would absolutely be aware of the stage of the tide and the size of the exchange before crossing any of the N. Oregon coast bars like Garibaldi, Nehalem and of course the graveyard of the Pacific, the Columbia River Bar.
