Default Dog nipples?

Not that this has anything to do with somthing im involved in right now.
But the topic came up.

I have black Lab, A few years back she gave birth to eleven puppys.
one died at birth, so we had ten to raise.

she has 10 nipples and we had to move the bigger pups off and let the little ones in, long story short.. they all grew up healthy with ten working nipples.

So heres my question:

Do little dogs that typicaly only have A few pup's have less nipples, do all dogs have ten nipples?
No milk in the front nipples of little dogs?

Jack, dogs can have from 5 to 10 nipples and even an odd number. The size of dog or potential litter size really doesn't matter much. And you're right, the front ones are merely pacifiers. If the dog has more pups than nipples, it's important to watch the feeding rotation to make sure that each pup gets on a production nipple regularly. When we have pups, we usually color code them so we can watch them closely.

Just my two pennies.

Oh, the things that keep us up at night. And I'll bet that you are the first to ever post "dog nipples" on a fishing forum.

Makes me laugh, I watched a serious throwdown at the Clackamas County Fair this year with a litter of piglets that were trying to get to mommy and there were not enough nipples to go around, talk about competition!!

My vet wife concurs with Chromaflage - varied count, and more productive near the rear.

Litters we've had from 8-13 pups seem to figure out the feeding pattern by themselves. The front nipples don't hold as much milk as the rear ones, but they are the first to produce milk and the last to dry up. Both my females have 9 nipples.

A serious runt or sick pup will need suplimented... but we use canned whole milk and a bottle for that.

Ref: http://www.ovra.com/dvmbios.html. Dr. Donna actually moved to

Oregon because of the fishing opportunities!
OK Vet types......I always thought it was the other way around. Please to explain to me the term ""Hind Teat"" then?

Had a dobie that had 13 pups once...And her daughter had 6 two weeks later.
Busy mornings at the feeding trough for sure.

I think the term "sucking hind teat" came from watching piglets start the bumping process from up front, and watching the "bump" go down the line, until the poor piglet at the hind teat gets bumped off....and nothing left for him!

What is amazing is the teets go from feeding pups to virtually flat in 2-3 weeks after the pups are weened.
