Coosbay this weekend....Tailchaser
TC,
Did you get out this week for Tuna? How was it if you did? So far we are looking at Saturday, but not sure about Sunday with the wind. Are you heading out this weekend?
Someone was saying you can get ice at the commercial building south of the docks. Do you or anyone know the procedures for getting ice from them? Someone last weekend said they would give it to you for free. We were hoping you could just pull up with the boat and trailer and load it like that rather than carry it to the docks.

Re: Coosbay this weekend....Tailchaser
The report for salmon and tuna is as follows:
1. Tuna - The water is very warm, very close to shore and people are picking up fish sparatically from 5 miles out until 20 or so where they're starting to find a few more fish. There's a thermal break around 32 miles where the water temps actually drop and I think that's keeping the large numbers of fish outside normal range. A boat went out yesterday and hit 40 miles and saw tuna as far as he could see jumping and going crazy from school to school. They landed all the fish they wanted in a couple of hours and came home.
Salmon - I went out two nights ago and decided to salmon fish because of the water. It was pretty choppy and short periods, but it was fishable. Mostly because of the tides right now. Anyhow, we hooked 7 fish within an hour and had a triple hookup about the time when my steering cable went "snap" and we got a free ride in from the coasties. I did hook one fish that broke 50 lb tuff line however in 60' of water. The salmon are going nuts because of the amount of bait that's around right now. You almost have to beat them off with a stick. There are also a ton of blue sharks around if you want to play with them on a steel leader.
As of the ice situation, if you're going to get a ton of it there's an ice making plant in downtown coos bay that you can shovel from their pile of throwback ice in the back for 5 bucks. Works good for tuna. The only problem is getting around while they're open. Their number is 800.828.6717. Or there is an ice plant in charleston, but I've never used them because I live close to the other one and their number is 541.888.2212. The weather report isn't looking so nice this weekend so I might be doing to honeydo's and waiting for some nicer days. Oh yeah and the part where my boat is in the shop getting a new steering cable might limit me as well. Hope you do well, it looks like you should be able to beat the wind in the morning and get some limits of salmon. I also hear the crabbing was super last weekend too. Anyhow, that's what I know.

Re: Coosbay this weekend....Tailchaser
TC,
Thanks for the great info & phone numbers. We will be there Friday night. Last weekend they were a little off on the weather predictions, so I was hoping they were a little off this weekend to our advantage.
We are still looking to hook up with someone at the docks that is headng out for Tuna if we have to go far.
Good luck with the steering cable! What fun that must of been!

Re: Coosbay this weekend....Tailchaser
I'm kind of confused on the weather predictions myself. This whole week we were supposed to have 25-30 knot winds and probably as high as a couple of gusts went were 20 MAYBE. But in the predictions, going from a 16 second interval with 3' swell is absolutely flat and the next day be at 8' with a 6-8 second interval and 5' chop is a tremendous swing of events. Plus, I didn't see anything on the weather reports to show why this would happen.
I just called the bar report and it's 2-4 chop on the bar during the middle ebb of low tide and there are no restrictions. Winds are 5 Knots from the NW.
I wouldn't mind heading out with ya dave but I have a softball tourney this weekend I said I'd play in after looking at the weather predictions earlier in the week. The first game is 8 am. But after that if the weather is still good I might run out there real quick to pick up some salmon. I might grab dad's boat that's moored down there real quick and shoot out. I wouldn't want you to wait around for me and miss the morning bite.
