How Late Can You See Bears?
Wondering how late into the year that you all have seen bear? I am hearing varied oppinions about when bears hybernate or whether they hybernate at all on the coast. Effectively, is bear hunting viable through the end of the season? December 15th east and 31st west.

They are all over the place right now in the oaks..One of the best acorn crops we've had in a while...Bears are living in them...

Re: How Late Can You See Bears?
I have seen them on the Upper Clackamas like between Ripplebrook and Olallie Lake in mid November to early December on warmer days.

There are plenty of oaks in the white river area and they are still seeing bears. My neighbor saw a boar chasing a sow last weekend.

Re: How Late Can You See Bears?
We hunt elk the last few weeks of november up neer Mt Adams. We see bears and bear tacks all over in the 2 feet of snow every year.
Of course our bear season closes mid November (15th this year).
Up neer Klickitat in the scrub oaks the ground has bean littered with the smooth peanutbutter looking piles bears leave when feeding on acorns. Of course the only bear we've seen had a cub in tow.

I think bear season is viable through the end on the coast. I usually see activity in Coos County during elk season. If you stop and listen long enough, you will hear them down in the draws.

Re: How Late Can You See Bears?
One night I saw a bear at nearly 11:57 pm and thought," wow, that is as late as I ever remember seeing a bear." It was a black bear and though light was thin, I was sure of my latest sighting. Yep, 11:57pm!!!! Beat that!!!!!!

Re: How Late Can You See Bears?
Well, Ive never killed a bear so I couldnt tell you wether hunting them late is viable or not, but Ive seen bear tracks in the snow during late archery deer season, and had them in my trash cans mid December.

Re: How Late Can You See Bears?
If bears have good food sources throughout the winter, then they dont hibernate. Here around Florence, we have tons of bears, both in town and around town, that do not hibernate because they can either get food or are being fed all winter long. I suspect its that way along a good portion of the coast since the climate is more mild and more food to find.
