Default Garibaldi 61 deg at 1 mile out!!!

I was salmon fishing on Monday 7/14/03 and noticed the water temp was 61 deg.

Question: How far out are the Tuna?

Hey Skip, on Tuesday it was the same thing out of Depoe. Miles and miles of 60 - 61 degree water. The first 10 - 12 miles from shore was a murky green though. Then it goes to a clear green. The blue water was a good 25 miles out. At the very least, you need the clear green water. And a temperature break (i.e. goes from 61.0 to 61.4 within a half mile). Along with a surface rip, signs of feed, etc.

Green, 61 degree water with no life in it & no signs is not the best tuna water. All that being said, you may find a few stray fish in that dead green water. To improve your chances though, run out a little and look for some signs.

We got all our fish 25+ miles out. We stopped 3 times on the way in to try for that last fish, but got nothing. Within the last week however, several folks have gotten their last fish within 10 miles or so. There was a better temp break then though (like 58/59 deg water on the inside).

I know it's blasphemous to say this, but if it does blow from the NW for 4/5 days, I think it will actually help the tuna fishing in that a sharper temp break will form. Better for the salmon fishing too. The only thing 61 deg water at the beach is good for is swimming in the surf.

I would look for that green to blue transition near the 100 fathom curve, 17-19 miles out before I put em in. I would stop and fish any breaks or signs of life that I found on the way, but my guess is you will find fish near that 100 fathom line.

What do you think Kurt, is it worth the effort at Garibaldi? I'm heading there for salmon this weekend anyway.I'm trying to decide whether to pack the Ice and fuel.

It was the same thing yesterday Wednesday at Depoe. 61 degree water right to the beach. We hit our first tuna at 19 miles where the blue and clear green were mixing. The tuna were really scattered and I agree with the fact that a little north wind and more distinct temperature and color breaks would improve the rate of catch. But who is to complain when the ocean is beautiful and you get a occasional fish. The fish were still running a good grade but it appeared that the larger grade 20-25 were in the green blue mix and the further we got offshore the smaller the fish. I dont know if this was just coincidence or ?. Fred

Kenai-
I would do it if I were you. I can't fish this weekend or next, but with all the warm water, if I was going to head out of garibaldi, I would bring the tuna gear and the salmon gear.

I have never gone after them out of Garibaldi. However, looking at the charts, if I was fishing out of t-bay. I would head to the curves off 45 33.5 and 124 24 and troll south.

There is also a pretty good seamount out at 45 27 and 124 43. I think this is about 40 miles though, and i doubt you would need to go that far to find fish, but I bet it holds em. There are other seamounts in the area. Good fishing, I bet.

I'm planning on fishing out of Garibaldi on Sat with Smily & FM-2.
We are targeting salmon, but if the conditions are right we might have to try for tuna.

Kenai,

I won't know about the conditions until Sat morning, and hopefully after we have a limit of salmon, unless they are not biting and its 10:00 am.

I need to get a few things yet for tuna: slush tank, 90# mono leaders, double hooks, and hand-lines.

But if you are out there, and we want to try for tuna, then I would be happy to buddy up with you.
I'd appreciate it either of us needs to head back, that we could do that too. 19' Alum Harbercraft with tan top and Suzuki outboard.

I'll be on VHF 16, 68, & 78.

Yeah, Its all relative to the conditions for me as well. The forecast is getting better though, 3 & 3 with a west swell 15kt winds in the PM though.
Game time decision for sure. Last weekend was supposed to be a lot better than it actually was.

Kenai,
Are you set-up for tuna?
Have you gone after them before?
In your boat?

I have talked with my crew and we are getting setup for tuna.
If the water temp is any indication for salmon biting or not, and the temp stays high, then the salmon may not be biting anyway, like they were on Monday.
