Default Popcorn & Tuna

I thought I'd share this story with ya all about the first Tuna run of 03 on the Wak'm & Stak'm.The story starts out several months before actually when RJ is told about an ol' tuna skipper and his bag of popcorn.. yup that stuff > ,it seems the ol' skipper swears up and down on his bag of gold (it really brings em to the top he says ), so RJ's ,thinkin he's come across somethin pretty darn covert and plans his attack the night before the trip by throwing a couple bags in the microwave( extra butter by the way)and as the microwave is making music ,RJ has visions of tossing handfuls of the bountiful bliss across the stern and watching the tuna come to the surface like trout to a mayfly hatch ,well the days upon us and were out at the 61 spot with fish in the box, when RJ decides it's time to unleash the weapon so he turns towards the cabin to fetch his prize and what does he see but the skipper ol' Wak'm eating the goods,I hollerd at him ..dude your eating the bait and grabbed the second bag before it also found a home and proceed to the stern of the boat and toss a few handfuls out and it wasn't a minute later and we have a triple on ,so as most of you know its a fire drill with lines getting crossed and rods getting weaved in and out to keep from being tangled, what neither of us notice is the bag of Popcorn has ended up on the floor and were stomping and tracking it over every square inch of work space and before long it's like a sheet of ice and we cant even stand up,now them lil' gals in the ice capades are good but they don't hold a candle to some of the moves were bustin ,I got to laughing so hard ,now Wak he's not seeing the humor in it as I am and throws some rock salt down to help with the traction and all is well,we finished up the day with out incident and had a good laugh about it later but I think Popcorn is now banned on board. RJ

I've heard stories about a couple of Coast Guard Captains that do the pop-
corn routine while out on the high seas. We've tried it with mixed results.
The idea is that the tuna will rise to the popcorn and keep the fish up high as
you zigzag back and forth through them ... however, it takes a *LOT* more popcorn
than you are likely to make up in your microwave. You want to go to Costco and buy the
HUGE bags of pre-popped stuff. Spread it liberally on top of the water when you
find a bunch of biters!!

Good Luck!

RJ,
I understand your post and thought it was humorous, stiring the pot as I call it and I got a kick out of the post. I was just clairifying that its not a wild idea just thrown out there. When the old guy told me about it, I thought he was high on old age. I just wonder if carmel or cheese popcorn would work better? Ill have to stock up on the popcorn tins after the holidays.

Popcorn works even better when you spice it with tuna blood. Keeps the crew from eating the chum. But then again a lot of newbies have been known to be forced to eat beating tuna hearts or walk the plank. Kinda tough swimming home from twenty miles out.

RJ RJ RJ....... I could have taken that one to the grave.....but NOOOoooooooo!

Why not tell the friends the rest of the story? When we planned to go, I asked about lunches and RJ said don't worry WAK I have it covered. What I should have said was...RJ what about our lunch?

So here I am a couple hours into the trip, arms aching and the body craving for protien. So I grabbed the ole' nose bag, pop the lid.....and all I see is 1 apple, a zinger, and popcorn.

You have to know this is the same guy that never cooks and eats me out of house and home...when he comes over it is great steaks, awesome Oriental dishes, home made desserts, and endless beer, fine wine, only the best for my fishing buddy.....and I get 1/2 and apple and he ate the darn zinger when I was busy.

I like RJ....but if he slid over the railing on his popcorn ( OH yes w/ extra butter) I would think that God, in his Divine wisdom heard my silient pray.

Next time he wants to try something, I am taking him to Subway.

I heard of the popcorn trick last night when speaking to an old commercial fisherman. He said it also makes it easier to find where the fish were when you last hooked up with them, and allows you to circle the boat around the areas. Kinda funny, but its nothing new.

I heard the same thing about the popcorn, but I was told that the floating popcorn somehow looks like some bait fish when the tuna are looking up at it. Not that they eat it, but it keeps the fish on the top like others said because it looks like a school of bait fish.
Who knows but it sure seems to have lots of uses. Emergency food, extra floation, leave a trail for gps back up, seat stuffing, instant bait school, did I say food?

<font size="2" face="verdana,arial,helv">Oh I must defend RJ here!

1) RJ is a tad spoiled. Part of that is Wak's own fault. See above Wak post.

2) This isn't the first time RJ has done this to Wak. Wak should know better by now.

3) The gourmet cook (Wak) should be providing the food, not the guy who can barely fry an egg.

Was this gourmet popcorn?

So- as long as we're on this subject..... Anything floating can have fish around it. Learned this in Cabo first, then applied up here. Boards, logs, pieces of foam, in Cabo even a little styrofoam coffee cup was worth a turn of the boat and a driveby.
Any significant floatsom would have a pyramid of baitfish under it. Little Guppy size right under it and the fish would get bigger and the pyramid wider as you looked down in the water column. We hooked up anout half the time we found these. Sometimes Dorado, sometimes a Bill.
Same thing applies up here to both Salmon and Tuna. Not always a sure thing, but worth a driveby. We hit a triple on Tuna last outing right beside a log, could have been a full house, we missed the last two hits clearing the lines.

PS- Bllelk - did those Indians use the NY Times or WSJ?
