Ed Winq boats - press release
----Local press release-----
Yesterday (7/15/03) a boat manufacturer located near Astoria Oregon was destroyed when fire swept thru the factory and destroyed the facilty and several boats finished and nearly finished. An eye witness said there were pools of aluminum where a couple nearly completed boats appeared to have melted in the extremely hot fire. The owner (Ed Winq) was not available for comment, but it is unknown if he had insurance and would be completing any of the boat orders he was filling. The cause of the fire was when a worker who goes by the name of "skulpin" apparently tried to weld a bow rail on a boat and didnt notice the gasoline jug left by another worker in the vicinity. Skulpin was treated for injuries at the site and released.
A couple local sports fishermen were told to be in tears at the site creating a make shift memorial. It was not apparent their connection with the boat manufacture but they were repeating "weld Ed weld"

Re: Ed Winq boats - press release
These things can be expected when one is asked to meet unreasonable deadlines.
I see it at my work all the time.
What a shame.

Re: Ed Winq boats - press release
Such a shame. And to think, Ed was just about to add a swing shift to handle the orders that were being placed by an internet group (Masons? Shriners? Salty Dogs?).
I actually heard the fire was caused by the heat of digital camera flash/strobes taking picture after picture after picture....
So close, yet so far away.

Re: Ed Winq boats - press release
THIS JUST IN: When finally reached for comment, Ed Wing said that the boats would be ready in two weeks, regardless of cost or consequences!
Unfortunately, he was unavailable for further comment as it appeared that his heavily armed escort was impatient to return to the new worksite, Bait'o Eggs garage.

Re: Ed Winq boats - press release
Ya- too bad they look like this:
The good news is that at least they don't smoke like tupperware. Looks like the welding is all done too (well done as a matter of fact).

Re: Ed Winq boats - press release
At least the boats are easier to trailer now. You just throw 'em in a bucket in the back of your pickup.
"Hey, you guys got an open seat?"
"Sure, it's right here in my shirt pocket."

Re: Ed Winq boats - press release
Skein - As of yesterday's trip to....er....Coos Bay, they look better than that.
Rear decks are in and the offshore bracket main engine mount is in place. Fuel tanks are about finished and estimated at 105 gal.
Gunwale decks are done all the way around the cockpit (an extension of the narrow gunwale top you see between the side of the cabin and the top of the gunwale in the photo).
The hold up is that the custom sliding window guys are running late. Not ready for another couple of weeks. AAARRRGGGGHHHH!!!

Re: Ed Winq boats - press release
RJ,
I'm probably going to pretty mine up a bit. Doubt that I'll go full paint, but I'm thinking some just to dress it up. They will have anti-fouling paint on the bottom, and I'm thinking a stripe around the side might look nice.
Problem is I know very little about painting metal, especially aluminum, especially in a salt water environment.

Re: Ed Winq boats - press release
does look good Skien,I only ask because I know from experience painted boats clean up so much quicker and you wont end up with the nasty blueish saltwater line thats next to impossible to pull out that and you will drop your potential a few tenths of a volt, the potential of Aluminum to salt is 1/3 of a volt from what I've been told my boats bottom is coated and sides primered and painted according to the digital volt meter I'm putting out .25

Re: Ed Winq boats - press release
I'd like to see one too, Martin. MINE!
Actually there are no pictures because several things are new with this boat. For one, we had him stretch it two feet over his usual offering, putting all the extra room in the fishing area.
He also redesigned the cabin with new roof-line and head room. Then he added the shear guard (pipe) around the hull adding 3 1/2 inches to the gunnel height, before adding a flat plat on top for mounting downriggers, etc.
Bottom line is, this is a prototype of what may well become a fleet of Fish Destroyers.
Trust me, when he gets it done, there will be an endless stream of pictures.

Re: Ed Winq boats - press release
If you like the look of the shiny aluminum, take a look at a product called "sharkhide". It seals the metal and prevents oxidization, that's if your not going to paint it. I put it on my sled this year and it seems to work pretty good. I also added some pretty sharp 8" striping, pretty easy to put on once you know what your doing.
