Who remembers this day?
My friend dropped off some pictures of a Tuna trip that we made out of Depoe Bay last year. Can't remember the month, it was Aug. or Sept., 2002. There were several Salty Dogs out on this day.
I can't ever remember seeing funnel clouds or water spouts like we did that day. There were several of them that happened through out the day. These dark storm cells would pass through, at times pouring down rain, and then the funnel would appear. We fished through one that was pouring down rain and after it passed we saw the funnels. Don't know what would have happened if it would have touched down on us? Might have been a wild ride!
These shots were taken from "Tuna Town" about 40 miles out looking back towards Depoe Bay.
Did anyone else see these?
Funnel touches down on the water. About 2 miles away.
This photo is a zoom of the first one. Look at the amount of water this thing is pulling up from the surface!
Look in the lower righhand corner. The dark spots and the white water is a pack of tuna on the surface. We were surrounded by them. Several of these came in to the boat on fish traps.
I thought this picture was interesting. Now which way did those Tuna go? The black dot was a Coast Guard helicopter out flying. I looked at that spot for a long time, thought that it might have been a "UFO".
Hope you enjoy these.
Jerry

WOW!! Thanks for the pics. Those funnel things look real scary.
Awsome pic of the tuna on the surface.
Were you casting the fish traps at them, or trolling.
Inquiring minds want to know.
Peace, Tom

Re: Who remembers this day?
I remember that day very well Jerry! You guys scared the bejesus out of us when the call came over the VHF, "Do you guys see the tornados?".
What a great day it was though! Lots of tuna, dolphins, birds, whales, etc..
That's the first I've seen of those pictures. Great shots!

Re: Who remembers this day?
I remember that day!! Tackle Buster (the charter boat out of Depoe Bay)
and I were out there fishing together and monitoring channel vhf80. He got
all excited and pointed out the water-spouts to me. Needless to say, it
bothered me a bit. Only thing worse than water spouts on the ocean is
lightning (IMHO)!!!
Nice pictures. Thanks!! Can't wait to show my wife!

Re: Who remembers this day?
There was some lightning out there that day too if I remember right. There was a huge dark black cloud that was just pouring down rain like a huge wall. Jerry was on the other side of the storm from us. I think that was the day Keta was with me.
I got a little nervous until I figured out the big storm was going to miss us.
Makes for a great memory since we made it back alive!

Hello all,
Thanks for all the replies on the pics and here are some answers to your questions.

Strangely, these storms were spaced out enough that you felt that there was no danger and that you could move away at anytime. All around it was bright sunshine. However, you can see by the boat wake that we were not getting any closer to the storm.

Tom,
We were stopped on a jig fish, when all these fish appeared at a distance and were closing in around the boat. We had fish traps rigged on salmon rods, and when the school came close enough we cast to them. I remember casting into the school, getting hit, then loosing the fish. I just let the bait fall and another fish hit. Lost that one to, and let it fall again. On the third fall another fish hit and I hooked that one. Thought that I would never get it to the boat on that little salmon boat rod. We weighed that fish, was the biggest of the day at 32lbs.
Probably could have held these fish at the boat for some time with live bait. :depressed:
The credit for helping me post the pics goes to Wet Fly, Thanks Robin for all the help and for the help on the boat Sat.
Filled the tanks last night with fuel, NO LEAKS! Then started the motor and discovered that the water pump seal and bearing was out. Ordered a new one from Seattle this morning. Hope to make it to the water this weekend for trials?
Fish Assassin, that morning I ran out along side you and fished near you and the Tackle Buster.
I just wasn't getting any fish there and I started leap frogging out, that's how I wound up outside everyone else, where the storms were.
Rod,
Yes it was a little wet if you fished through one of these storms. But it was really a nice day and the fishing was outstanding. We were near 30 fish and left biting fish to go home.
By the way, I haven't seen any salmon trolling reports from you? Have you been able to get out dory fishing? Just curious?
Just had a thought? Fish Assassin, if your wife sees these pictures do you think she will let you go out there fishing again?
Jerry

Re: Who remembers this day?
Yeah Jerry, it was really a weird day considering the rain, sun, lightning, waterspouts, etc.
I have only been out on the dory for 1 day trip so far. I came down with pneumonia for the last 2 weeks and am still not 100% yet but I couldn't take it anymore and had to get out last weekend with the sport boat.
I'm actually heading out with the dory tomorrow thru ???? to give her a go. Lots of stuff to learn in a short amount of time!
The closest thing I can relate to is if you took someone who's never been skydiving before. Put them on a plane, hand them a chute, then push them out the door and hope everything comes out o.k.! That's kinda how I feel!

"Just had a thought? Fish Assassin, if your wife sees these pictures do you

I'm sure that the life insurance policies that I have are more important than
me getting back alive??
My wife and I are having a disagreement about THIS weekend (which starts on Friday
for me). She thinks I should go to my neices' wedding at 6:30 Saturday evening
and my brother and I think we should be tuna fishing Saturday and Sunday. I promised
her that if the weather turned to poo on Saturday that I would be there for the
wedding. Hmm, maybe it's time I have to see just how bad of an ocean is "too bad"
to go fishing?
-assAssin-
Hmmm, fishing or keeping the wife happy ... what a dilemma!!

Re: Who remembers this day?
Fish Assassin,
They just don't understand do they?
You can get married anytime, but tuna only come once a year.
Rod,
Sorry to here that you have been so sick, I feel your pain brother. I have been sick since March 1st until 1st of July. Finally getting well after some minor surgery. Started a boat overhaul last year and am just about to finish this week. Haven't fished all spring or summer! :depressed: :depressed: :depressed:
That trolling thing isn't so hard:
1. Put lead in water
2. Snap on spread, let down deep into water
3. Bring up spread with salmon
4. Deliver salmon to buyer, leave with large
amounts of cash.
See, thats easy now, isn't it?
Good luck,
Jerry
