Default Sharpening tuna doubles

I have a box of Mustad #22 stainless tuna doubles.

I usually sharpen hooks with a double cutting face but using this tech I am shaving alot of the point off. Stainless is also softer than I am used to. Any tips/comments would be appreciated.

I have always just used em out of the box. When your going 8 one way, and the fish is going 30 the other, doesn't take a wicked sharp hook to hit home.

Every other kind of fishing I do, I like sharpest hooks possible. Tuna, I just use em out of the box. And try not to step on em on the deck.

Bugleman,
I have caught my fair share of albies on Mustad Doubles (Barbless). First question asked by a newbie is why do you use barbless? Second question, do you sharpen your hooks? You want to use barbless period. It is much easier extracting the hook from the ablie on a rolling deck and thrashing tuna. Most of the time they just drop the hook once they hit the deck if its barbless, but not all the time. Second. Sharpen those hooks? I can honestly say never have. They go deep enough long enough to get the tuna aboard. Finally, if that hook is really sharp that means it can go easy not only into a tuna but you. When the albie action is hot and heavy using handlines look out. Lots of line on the deck, Zukers with double hooks there too. Add in tuna boats, tuna splashers rolling seas, excitement and slippery decks and sharp hooks are a danger. That counts only for Albies. Other fishing, sharpen you hooks.

I have to agree with what the others have said above. I've never sharpened a tuna hook, have never felt a need to. I have only rarely lost fish once they hook up. The boat is moving fast enough that if the fish hits that thing, it's going to get set on its own, regardless of what you have.

I'm using trolling poles without bungees. The hook ups are solid and 90 per cent of the time they are hooked in the upper mouth with points of the hooks comming out of Mr. tunas nose. Therfore you do not need to sharpen the hooks. Make sure you use lighter weight hook if possible, they seem to penetrate better............Bobber Down
