Default Tuna rigging help anyone?

Without looking through search features and all the other fun stuff that follows, I was wondering if anyone will give me a quick tuna rigging for dummies lesson. It looks as if tuna was caught a mere 8 miles off Depoe a few days ago and that is right up my alley. I usually go out that far for salmon anyway. I have a couple Ugly "Tiger Sticks" with Penn GT's spooled with 80 pound tuff. What do I need to tie up with and how much line do you let out before you start to troll. You guys trollong between 6 an 8 mph

We will be hitting the pond on Friday morning for some salmon fishing and if the conditions are good and the water temp is still warm that close in, we will head west and give her a shot.

Thanks......

Chris, use the search. It's way easier than trying to go though it again. It's all in here with pictures.

Tacklebuster, are you running with another boat?

I recommend it if at all possible. 8 miles out is where you will start... who knows how far you will go.

Distance behind the boat, speed and color are really your only variables. I start short, because short = less tangles, and more multiple hookups. I lengthen gear and change colors til I get biting fish. Speedwize, I run fast (8-10) until I find fish, then slow it down to about 6 when I know I am in em.

Pilar- I haven't got any other boats lined up at this point. Capt Kujo invited me to hang with him but I don't want to slow him down. If we were running on the Columbia river I could give the Black Rockett a run for her money but she would do circles around me in the salt. He did offer me a seat on Friday if the conditions were too sloppy for my ride. Thanks for the links and the help. You guys running on Friday?

Your rods work fine. Rig tuna clones / feathers/ cedar plugs on 200 Lb mono with the perfection loop or crimp. colors are black/purple, Mexican Flag(yellow red green). speed is fine where you have it keep center lines shorter and outside lines longer. run handlines off the corners if you have them. distance is relative. we could see most of our gear working as we drove along. the farthest back gear you could see 2 swells back every once in a while. Cedar plugs will twist the heck out of your line so use the expensive corkscrew swivels or quality Sampo ball bearing swivels.

We could really tell the temp breaks with the color change I could not believe my eyes.

Good luck

General rule of thumb on colors. On darker cloudy days, use darker colored lures. ie., purple/black. On bright sunny days, switch to lighter colors. I run Mexican Flag almost all the time on at least some lines, as it seems to be a good all-around color. When the sun comes out and it brightens up, take off the purple/black and move to something brighter.

Tacklebuster, the forecast is for 4 and 6. I'd come down and run with you, but not if the forecast is close to being accurate.
go to http://www.geocities.com/crchowto/tunahandline
Craig has a copy of Pilar's making a tuna rig photo series (most of it anyway).
Being the tinkering kinda guy I am, I also added some hootchies to some of my rigs, gives it that bait school or bigger jig (fish) chasing smaller jig (fish) look. I saw it somewhere on the web, it's a daisy chain rig I believe.
I tied the swivel end knot, slid on a hootchie, shoved a 1/2 ounce egg sinker into it then a single crimp, repeat a couple of times. I had to "squish" some of the sinkers a bit, depending on the crimp size. I was also hoping this might get it down a couple of inches while trolling, but you could use corkies instead of lead.
I haven't tried em yet, but I also made a few with 50 lb. mono, a few hootchies in the daisy chain and one at the end with a 7/0 single hook to go on a rod. If they work out they can be made cheaply, just don't handline em.

Looks like it's been revised for the better. But 4 ft. wind waves: it's a long drive down for me with iffy conditions .
Good luck.
