Go out and catch \'em, or just buy it?
Every year, our family purchases around 200lbs of filleted tuna, and my mom cans like a maniac for a few weekends(she's getting a little older, so she's a little more insistent upon help nowadays! ) Awesome, nothing like home-canned tuna! Great for house warming, christmas gifts, etc.
Anyway, I've always wanted to go out and actually catch some...but, I definitely would be going for the meat; meaning, I'd want to make the trip worthwhile for bringing back at least part of our yearly canning quota.
Opinions...should I spend the money for a charter, or just buy the stuff like always??

You should buy a boat, all the gear, a buncha Ice and Gas, and get with the program!
It only hurts for the first fish.
Seriously, get your own, 25 fish limit. Average 20 lbs is 500 LBS. You stand a very good chance of getting all 200 lbs on one charter trip.

IMHO, there's nothing like FRESH tuna. Canned, the FRESHER the better. I visited a tuna boat in Newport two Thursdays ago and asked the captain when the tuna were caught. The tuna being sold had been caught the Sunday before.
If you have the means, go charter or with a Dog.

Re: Go out and catch \'em, or just buy it?
I spent a summer back in the mid 80's as a deck hand on a charter boat out of Gold Beach, it's been a while, but used to be pretty good on the ocean. I spent most of my time on the bottom fish trips up in the bow with my own trash can, catching fish as fast as I could go, to limit the boat faster...limits were a lot bigger then.
Reccomendations for timing on going with a charter (now or later in August), and who to go with? Newport, Depoe, CR, anything works for me.

Mike Stowe on the Blitz out of Newport. See his add on the main page. He also visits here under the moniker Albacore Tuna Captain.

How much per pound do you pay for the fillets?

Usually $1.25 per pound for the whole fish, and then around $1.50-$2.00 per fish to fillet, used to do our own, but so much easier for the "pros" to do it!!

Tuna are no different than any other fish. If you just want meat go to a store or restraunt. If you want an experiance and adventure, go fishing!
If you put a dollar value to your fun, you won't be having much! :depressed:

Since I haven't begged my way on a tune trip YET. We picked some up a Garibaldi Sunday watched them unload it off the boat. $ 1.35 a pound for the whole fish. You can't beat fresh tuna. on the BBQ.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helv">Ahhhh, yes, I completely agree!! But, if I can justify it even a little bit, maybe I can get the rest of the family to foot the bill for my "Meat Adventure".

You can never justify the $$$ cost of sportfishing. There is much more value in doing it as opposed to buying it. And you can control the quality.

Nicely said Keta. I couldn't agree more; it's about the experience & the memories. And if the family gives a $$$ blessing, so much the better!

Let me tell you I didn't grow up wanting to be a charter boat captain chasing TUNA, but what happens is sometimes a hobby gets WAY OUT OF HAND!
That's how USIA got started: A hobby that got way out of hand.

Yeah there CAPT KUJO!
"The big lie!" That's a good one!
Just think of how all those Tuna Company Executives denying that second hand tuna smoke kills millions of people every year.
I can just see myself now slurping pureed tuna through my trake-tube in my throat. Maybe blowing a few tuna bubbles..... Saying how I tried to quit, but just couldn't.
Hey, Brotha from another motha! How's the ocean looking for tomorrow?

Re: Go out and catch \'em, or just buy it?
So what do you all think, go now, or wait another month? They're going to stay just as close, right, and maybe get closer??
thanks for the info....I've got two co-workers who would like to go now as well.
