Default Boat Teams

To make picking teams easier lets share
1) The area we live in
2) M.O. for fishing trips, IE: Drive down at OMG or stay at the beach the fishing eve.
3) Boat stats, IE: Fuel consumption, Fuel capacity, Range, in miles assuming a 1/3 reserve, TUNA! hold size (in # of fish), # of fishers, etc.
4) Enthusiasm, IE: last guy of the water to Ehhh, maybe we'll go
5) Experience level.

I'll go first

1) Southeast Portland, and sometimes Aloha,
2) Drive down I-5, Salem, 22 and through Lincoln City. Almost always stay at the beach fishing eve. The boat is stored at S. Beach. We now can the fish at the beach and tend to stay over after the trip as well.
3) My boat burns 5 gallons an hour at cruise and 3 gallons an hour at troll, 42 gallons in an under deck tank and 20 gallons more in a strap on tank, estimated range (with 1/3 fuel reserve) 160 miles at 4 mpg, 7 fish in the 20# class in the under deck box, 8 to 30 more in totes and coolers, usual haul is 15 fish, 3 fishers but 2 is easier,
4) Almost always the last guy off the drink, 'Puffin' is definitely that guy.
5)I've been doing this a while.

Sure, what the heck.

1 - Live in Depoe Bay
2 - Wake up the morning and look out the window, see how I feel and decide if I wanna fish or go to work. Tough decision sometimes.
3 - Hmmm this is the tough part. 30' Sport Craft Offshore Sportfisher. Boat burns roughly 20gph at cruise speed. Cruises at about 15kts/hr. Run out 35 miles with all day tuna-troll and run back in burns roughly 120 gallons. Tank holds 100 gallons, and I carry an extra 40 gallons in cans for offshore refueling. Fish hold capacity - 30 average 20lb tuna with ice. Plus 150qt ice-chest on the swim platform. Can comfortably fish with up to 3 fishers plus myself for tuna.
4 - Boat is always in the water and ready to go.
5 - Have been on the salt fishing tuna since the El Nino of 1997.

I have to work the fuel cumsuption out. The boat will be a lot lighter with all the saturated foam out of it.
Experience Moderate Still have a lot to learn.
Normally stay in hotels of camp or sometimes stay at a beach cabin in Newport.

OK, I'll play!

1) live in Newberg.
2) drive down 99w/18/101 to Depoe Bay. Get the boat set up on Thursday evening
then drive up to Pacific City to stay the night. Hit the docks about 4:30 Friday
morning to go fishing. Wash and repeat for the next 3-4 days!
3) My boat burns about 6.5 gallons at cruise, 2.5 gallons on the troll. I have a
280 gallon capacity and only need to fill up every other trip out. (about 150 gallon
or less burn). My below deck fish boxes will hold about 1100 lbs. +- a little.
4) I watch the weather carefully. If I don't like what I see, I'll be the first
one to yell "chicken" and go in ... however, if the weather is fair to middling I
like to fish until about 4-4:30/pm.
5) I've been fishing TUNA! for about 12 years as captain of my own boat. So I
guess you could say I am "moderatly" experienced. After all, I'm only a "weekend
warrior".
6) I don't usually try to set up with a running partner, but will keep in contact
with anybody that is out there. If you need help/are having problems ... give
me a shout and I'll do what I can for you.

1)I live near the Hillsboro airport.

2)Drive to Rockaway, wedn we have a small place here...setup for boating, fishing and fish cleaning.

3)19ft Robalo, 5 gallons an hour,70 gallons cap, range 100miles, have capacity for 300lbs of bled and iced fish. I do not leave fish on deck, uniced, just for capacity. Boat will fish 3 for salmon, 2 for the real long hauls 25+ miles...comfort factor.

4)LIke to fish early, be off the water by 13:00, allowing fish, crab and boat cleaning.....prep for the next day.

5)Ran alot of rivers, last 11 years dedicated to ocean fishing...anything with gills, but especially tuna. Though I'd prefer not to use my training while fishing, flight/trauma medic 18 years.

Keta, I thought I had the only bad drive.
It's good to know someone else can relate to a four hour +++ drive on Sunday night at 6-8 pm, and that's in good traffic. Try it from Woodinville Friday sometime at 4pm on I-405, it takes 2 hours just to get to I-5!!!!
Brazed the hole in the tank, leaked worse than before. Is it possible that hole could be under the tank in that same area?
Do you want to get back in the boat buisn.?
Live in Sammamish Wa.
Fish out of Warrenton on and off for 26years
Boat has 300miles + - range
400gl total fuel
20gph at 1800rpm's appx. 14knots cruise speed
7gph fishing
can burn 30gph at 25knots if needed
Good assortment of electronics, Vhf chnl 11 or 19
can hold more fish than can be used
Ice? what ice? Trow um in a sack when bled, too lazy/cheap to fetch ice.
Can fish 4-5 - whomever is not sleeping
fished for Tuna a long time
forgot more than I remember

ALWAYS TUNA FISH WITH A WING MAN ALWAYS IN SIGHT
OF EACH OTHER.
Keta, when do you want to go?

Live in Stayton (east of Salem) and drive to Corvallis through Turner and then over to Newport on Friday nights. I stay in my camper in the parking lot.
My boat is a 19 foot Marlin hardtop that is ocean ready. The engine is being rebuilt as I type this. Should be good to go mid August.
My four banger Ford is good on gas. With extra fuel aboard, I can do the Chicken Ranch and back with 1/2 tank to spare.
Boat has a cabin capable of storing lots of fish. Weight will be an issue, however, with the little Ford to push me back.
I have quite a few hours on the salt and have learned many lessons through bonehead reckoning. I still have much to learn but am comfortable on the big pond.
I will fish tuna for the first time next weekend on a charter out of Newport. I’m collecting tackle to go it with the dogs soon.
I'm a single parent so my time away from home can be limited at times.
I also fish a lot with Stoyjun Princess and Captain Latex out of Newport in their 20’ deep vee Alumaweld. They too are collecting tuna tackle in anticipation of joining the dogs.

I'm running Twin 225hp Mercury Optimaxs (2-stroke)
fuel consumption is phenominal! These engines are model year 2003. I had a 2000 year model, nothing but a piece of junk.

These new models are great, purr and dependable (so far), they have about 140 hours on each engine. Since the coast is only $8,900.00 each, hard to go to a 4 stroke for twice as much money.

Currently I am listed as crew in the salt. Qualified white water boater 16' fishrite drift boat.

I prefer to drive down the night before and sleep in my canopy on 6" of foam rubber. I am competent crew and have salmon, halibut and tuna gear including hand lines. Can dive, fish, run the boat etc. Sleep is a must for me otherwise the sea sick pills get to me. ZZZZZZZZZZ

I am an enthusiastic fisherman with a good work ethic and I live in ALOHA.

4. I am there to fish. time depends on weather, fish and my schedule the next day...I only control one of them
5. My interest in saltwater fishing rekindled by Pilars stories. exper. moderate

I'm not exactly sure how to say the following so here it goes:
All that said I am very particular about people I "team up" with. I expect most of you are. I wouldn't hesitate to assist someone in need providing I could do so safely. I'm sure most of you would do the same. I think teaming up is a good idea, the only problem is that I don't know very many Salty Dawgs that well at all. Attending only one TUNA! meeting didn't help, but my work schedule didn't allow me to attend more. I still at times feel like an outsider to the Salty Dawgs. I am sure that as time goes on that will change as I know more people and more people know me. Meanwhile I am not sure that I should ask someone who doesn't "know" me to team up with me. I could be a flake for all they know. Correct me if I'm wrong!

Some day i will have my boat, i am currently looking for one, but not sure what i want yet. Gas money not an issue, or cleaning, as i always do my share or more.
And i think the team idea is the best, regardless if you like somebody or not, if you are there we need to look out for eachother. Flake or no flake... If i am in trouble and i don't know you i am sure you will help me, if i know you and you don't help god help us both...

Hi, I'm Greg and I'm a Tunaholic in denile.

I reside in Grand Ronde which puts me an hour or less away from port.

I may be leaving from home, camping at fishcamp, camping at southbeach marina, or NOT sleeping in the extra-cab of my pickup at the Depoe Bay ramp.

My boat is a 28ft Thunderbird with twin 302 V8's.
Burn rate at cruise is 14.5 gph or 1.15 mpg. Fuel capicity is 130 gal. My range is 100mi based based on 1/3 reserve. I have a 20 gal spare fuel cell that can be used for longer range trips.

Fish capacity is only limited by the amount of ice we decide to stow. I can hold 30 average sized fish in coolers alone and there is major under deck fish holds if I so choose to use.

I'm there to fish!
That said there are many factors that decide my time on the brine.

First of which is weather. I fish for enjoyment and when the weather prevents my enjoyment it's time to call it.

Second, Boat fitness. If at anytime I feel the boats mechanics are comprimised....I call it.

Third, the work begins when you get back to port. I always keep in mind what has to be done when I get back. I'm never the last one off the water.

Fourth, captain and crews schedule. This is determined before the trip. I don't like surprises. Announcing at 10:00 that you have to be off the water at 2:00 is not acceptable so they best have their dive gear.

I have 20 years experience piloting vessals in salt water. I'm knowledgable from the Wrangle Narrows, British Columbia, Straits of Juan De Fuca, Puget Sound, and the Pacific Ocean. I first fished the pacific when I was 8 years old on Papas' dory.

And I'm still learning!

Mark, I'm surprised to hear you still feel like an outsider. Your certainly not veiwed as one. We will cark the Pacific Pigs together another day.

I have no problem with taking a pup on provided their craft and themselves can pass inspection .

You don't fish the pacific in leaky bay scows!

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helv">Well said, FishwhenIcan .... well said. You are a Salty Dog and should not feel like an outsider.

The issue is trust. How do you learn to trust a stranger or strangers? That's why the answers here will help all of us. We can figure out who in the group most closely matches who. The trust part comes from expecting certain things from the others on your team and having your expectations met or exceeded.

Without exception, all of the dogs I have met or fished with have turned out to be standup guys.

Also as a team you may have to change your expectations to meet the common goals of the group. You get the safety and security of having someone else in another boat to depend on but you may have to give up your desire to fish till last light.

We can do this. You guys are awesome. If I and others set high expectations of this group I have every confidence in a positive outcome. As teams we can chase our dreams and not lose anyone to bad luck or poor decision making.

That is my bottom line, leave no one behind and have fun without taking unnecessary risks.

was sort of fluid. You might pick one or two other boats that you are going
to fish with for the day, but as situations changed so sometimes did your running
partners. I remember several times when 6-10 boats would all leave the beach
at the same time and run out as a pack. As the day wore on, you kind of kept in
touch with everybody by radio. If your chosen running partner was getting ready
to run in and you weren't ready yet, he would usually team up with another boat
that was ready to run in and you would attach yourself to another boat(s) to form
new teams. This worked pretty well but the key was * communication *. All
members of the team had to be comfortable with changing partners and everybody had
to be comfortable that they were going to be SAFE in the new partner relationship.

By doing it this way, it gave you more options. In the morning you would pick one
or two other guys for the run out. Being a fluid situation usually ment that the guys
you went out there with were not necessarily the same ones you came back with. 'Course,
the guys at Pacific City are a pretty tight bunch. If anybody *ever* had a problem
out there, EVERYBODY was aware of it and everybody worked as a team to get the boat
with the problems in saftely.

Just my two cents worth for whatever it's worth.

FA- I think you have it dialed. This whole idea and post is good, but I keep looking at the posts and thinking of the complexity of trying to set this up in advance. The "fluid" word nails it and so does "communictaion".

Edit- I especially like that word "communictaion"

Does burying a hatchet in your head or shooting you with the nearest firearm count as "communication"?

Maiden tuna trip from Depot on Sat. if weather permits.

Would like to travel with the pack whoever is going.

It sounds like a 0500 start for most of the SD's.

Will answer to Ed or "Svboata" ch78. White & blue dory.

This is officially my first post on ifish! I actually joined ifish because of the SD's! I fish anything and everything but I do it safely. I have been fishing on and off in the Ocean since I was 6 yrs old. I have fished from Big Bay in Canada to the West Coast Vancouver Island to down through the San Juan Islands and up the Columbia. My excursions have ranged from 45’ Carver to a 14’ Valco. Currently, I have a 23’6” Jetcraft with a newly rebuilt 150 hp Oceanrunner Johnson with a 74 gal fuel capacity and 20 gal carry aboard. I am based out of Tigard, Or, and am looking to get into Tuna off our coast. The reason…I went to Hawaii and hooked into a 700+ lb. Marlin and now I am hooked into getting back out into that crystal blue water again. My boat is dialed in and now it is time to get to work! Any information anyone has on gear that is a must and if they are willing to help out someone new to this fishery I would be eternally grateful. I will not run out 25 miles on my own and would be interested in teaming up. I would like to get to know the person first to make sure we under the same school of thought. I have gone out in nasty water out of the Straight of Juan and know my limits. I also know there is still a lot to learn and appreciate constructive criticism. This coming weekend I am going out oversize fishing in the powerwater below Bonneville Dam, but next weekend I would like to head to the coast and get some ‘nookie, and maybe a few Tuna as well.

Hope this wasn't too long, but I had a lot to say!

I live in Portland, but have a weekend house in Oceanside where I keep the boat. On weekends, I get up and look at the water and decide whether to go or not. If the Netarts bar is really flat, I will go out of Netarts, otherwise up to Tillamook. I can trailer down to Depoe.

Boat is small: 15 foot Bayrunner (Like an Aluminum dory), 25 hp Evinrude, 3.5 Tohatsu kicker, VHF, GPS. 13 gallon tank plus a 5 gallon can. The main tank gets me 90 miles of range, and I consider the 5 gallon can my reserve (38%) for long runs.

I usually run alone, but can take one passenger. Lingcod, rockfish, Coho and Chinook are primary targets. If conditions are perfect, I will try tuna up to 20 miles out...but have only done it twice in the last few years. Conditions have to be really good.

Forgot to mention my experience. I grew up in Southern California and have logged 10,000 hours in small boats, mostly down there. I've been fishing Oregon ocean waters for 5 years.

Welcome RocknReel. You should come down the Depoe bay and meet the pack when they return from a hunt. You can see the gear and the boats set up for TUNA! fishing. Just look for the Salty Dogs or Ifish flags and the guys with the piles of dead fish.

All right nutbuster...I mean knuclebuster  What kind of story do you want? How about a story about Whidbey Island and how a schooled you on how to give the resident blackmouth the onion (by the way, this is the guy that told me about ifish). Or, I could tell about trips to Van. Island, or how I taught you to fish in freshwater. In fact I have a story about Steelhead fishing I would love to share with everyone! First, it has to be understood that Knuckle and I went to college together and were roommates for a few years. The one thing parents should never allow their children to do in college is room with someone who loves fishing as much as knuckle or I do. Let me tell ya, it’s like putting an obese person who hasn't eaten for a week in front of a free buffet! We would check the weather forecast the night before to see if we were going to class the next day or out for a few mobys on the water. However, this story deals with bank walking and the elusive steelhead.

I have always told knuck. about how great it is to stalk up on the stream and cast into the riffles and a few moments later be attached to a freight train headed full bore downstream. Knuck. decided this sounded pretty good and wanted to see if the stories were true. Of course, he is a salt man and needed to borrow gear, which is no problem so we were set. One other thing should be mentioned, he didn't know how to tie rigs for fresh water gear either. When we finally arrived on the water I gave a little lesson on keeping your line tight after you cast and just bounce the lure across the bottom. I think the rush of the water was too loud for knuck to hear because he proceeded to get stuck on the bottom and lose his setup. Being the good friend I am, I gave him my rod and would tie a new one up for me--hypothetically-- to use. Once he lost the next setup the process started over again. After about 45 minutes of this--and a little cussing under my breath--knuck hooked into a nice hatchery and we followed it downstream fighting all the way. Our first mishap was a small recess in the bank we had to walk across to follow the fish downwater. Not a problem you might think, as did we. For anyone who has walked the banks of a river before, sometimes the depth can be deceiving! Knuck stepped in to this shallow pool and dropped about three feet into the water, lost his balance, and braced himself by putting his left hand down. This caused a soaking arm and of course when the top of the waders go in... I, not noticing his height adjustment he had at this drop off thought he just stumbled. I was following shouting out constructive criticism like; DO NOT LOSE THAT FISH OR YOU ARE SWIMMING IN AFTER IT. I remember looking down and not noticing anything that might trip me and then, sploosh! Jackpot! Found the hole. I was able to stumble to the shallower side of this bay and only get my arm wet up to my forearm. Next, we ran across and enchanted tree. We surmised the purpose of this tree was to grab the unwary fisherman’s line from an aerial assault. After, knuck had fallen victim; the battle was really on! In all my time on the water I have never seen someone fight a fish with their right hand and use their left to untangle their line and jacket out of branches with such grace, WHILE dripping stagnant river water on their head. I rushed to his aid by cussing at the tree to distract it and breaking a few key branches. Amazingly, the fish was still landed and bagged for a successful trip.

Frist off this is one geat site and want to thank all of the salty dogs for the wealth of information. Always learning somthing and hope to start contributing.

1) Live in Gaston (south of forest grove)
2) Drive down the afternoon before (moored in Newport slip B-10 for the summer)
3)25' C-Dory "cruiseship", 100 gal fuel 140 mile range with 30% reserve and full load(installing two 6.5gal tanks also)should be able to troll at tuna speeds with kicker in good conditions and save a bunch of gas.
Cruise speed w/full load and good conditions 18mph
Tuna storage hmmmm maybe 20 with three big coolers, two will need to be stowed in the cabin. one on deck as a cooldown tank and a 40" x40" x18" deck locker for the remainder. All guess work here.

4) I love boats the ocean and fishing but I'm not a much of a risk taker when it come to our little part of the pacific.

5) Spent a fair amount of time ocean fishing and short hop ocean sailing over the last 30 years but far from an "old salt". Can navigate without a plastic jesus (what a great term) although I have three on board for the ocean and carry paper. Boat is maintained to perfection and can repair most anything on the water.

Did the halibut thing with help from the dogs and have the tuna jones baaaad.

Well, let's see: I fish from a 20' Hewescraft Searunner. I am powered by a Honda 130 with a 9.9 kicker that is really a back-up more than a trolling motor. I carry 35 gallons main tank and two 12 gallon additional tanks. I run about 30-35 gallons a trip for tuna. I have fished the Oregon coast, both commercially and for sport, since 1971. That sounds like a lot but it is really only about 10 years of actual operations.
I tend to drive over from Lebanon on Hwy 20. I leave early and usually stay out until I have run out of ice or 2-3 in the afternoon, if the weather is reasonable. If I take enough ice and the temperature is cool, I can take 24-30 tuna, 18-28lbs, on board.
I fish during the week mostly as I work weekends. Tuesday through Thursday are my best times. This schedule makes it more difficult to keep running mates. So far I have been lucky and only had one day that I went salmon fishing when I could have been out for tuna!
My boat fishes three comfortably and four if needed. For tuna I actually like two or three. I am addicted to tuna fishing but don't go if I am the only boat I am aware of. I also don't want to bounce so much that I am not having fun..even if not "dangerous".
I have enjoyed running with UG, Marty, Mark Mc., Seasquid, Sea Jypzee, and several others. Fished halibut with a bunch of you. I have only had the pleasure of Threemuch as crew, that I met from Ifish. I also have fished with Deepslayer and Diamondside. My regular crew are not frequenters of Ifish (one must question their sanity). Pilar and Ocean Blue have been great resources for me and I would gladly fish with and run with either or both of them ...thanks guys!
I have been building contacts and hope to add more of you this year, as running mates and as boat mates.
I am happy to run with most but I always have a little hesitation until I know you "under fire". I think this site will build good mates and best practices. Thanks John...for all you do!

I live in Hillsboro
Drive down I-5, Salem, 22 and through Lincoln City. I intend to stay on the boat the night before but have been known to share fish camp with the dogs.
I have a 58 gallon main tank with 10 and 6 gallon reserve tanks. My Suzuki DT75 has a range of 180 miles on the main motor and tank using the rule of thirds. I have a 8HP Honda 4 stroke to back up the main.
I am not sure what the capacity is in Tuna but intend to answer the question soon. I intend to procure a commercial fish tote very soon. I would guess that I can take between 15 and 20 Tuna in the 18 to 25 pound class. I can fish myself and 1 very comfortably and will likely try a crew of 2 at least once.
I plan to hit the beach before O-Dark-thirty as I am not comfortable coming in after dark so my boat will not likely be the last boat in. I am cautious. I have and will continue to call trips due to weather and changing conditions.
I am new to Tuna but I have had great instructors.
I hope to see a few of you dogs on the pond as soon as I get my boat preped and shaken down.

Ohh rocknreel, your words are awe inspiring. The story is true, but one thing you left out is how badly I kicked your butt on the river for those chromers over the years. I do appreciate the help setting me up with the tackle. Now, If I could just teach how to fish the salt, we'd be in good shape.

Alright knucklebuster there is no reason to fib! Who schooled you on your own turff and taught you the value of the point wilson date in salt water for nooks? Oh Ya, that was me! The only time you came close to me in a season, was back in '99 when we each racked in 36 springers a piece. Mostly due to the fact that I am such good luck on the boat!
I will give you this... I have never seen a better fisherman than you when it comes to never changing you mono and still being able to land a fish! How old is that line again (that still has yet to be changed)?
