Default is it worth a stop at the Metolius next week

Going to Bend next week for work and was wondering if it would be worth a stop at the Metolius to wet a line.

Not sure where or what to use. Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I am new to fly fishing and have tried the Metolius only a couple times with no luck.

Thanks,

I think it is always worth it to stop at the Metolious. Its the only river I can get skunked at and still go home feeling better than when I got there. To this day I have not caught a single fish on that river. I have hooked and nearly landed a few bulls, but that is about it. I'd help you with patterns but I am in the same boat as you...

you beat me to it...

for flies, stop in at the Camp Sherman store...they're always very helpful in pointing you in the right direction...plus, they have the BEST sandwiches!!!

One of the few rivers where I have hooked, played and landed...a rock! Several times even. I haven't been there in a while, but the standard stuff works. Yes, you can get some snazzy something and it might outdo the regulars. Pick up rocks and look at the bugs, size and color! Now that I gave you the standard clues and a huge hint, go fish!

Try a 5" black articulated spawning bunny leach at dusk. Worked for me!

I have found that for me the metolius is a river that is a tough one to just stop by and fish. I believe it is a river that you need to put some time and effort in order to catch fish. I have tried have tried several times and have been skunked every time so far. I did hook one fish only to have my tippet snapped by a sharp lava rock.

good luck

I haven't fished it in a few years and never in November. That said, I've found the river fairly productive by getting away from the crowds a bit and consentrating on the hatches. Metolius fish are smart and selective! There is or used to be a great fly shop in Sisters (Fly Fisher's Place?) that had lots of good flies and info for the Metolius.

It's a beautiful river; worth getting to know b/c it's near Santiem Pass, therefore a good fallback plan for any trip over the mountains.

Tried fly fishing for my first time ever and it was on the Metolius this past summer. Hooked one on a black flying ant. Not sure how well that will work in November though.
