Default A little GPS help

Figure you guys know the most about these things. I want one for hiking/fishing/hunting/finding the way home from bars. To justify this, I'm telling my wife its to help her get around the Portland Metro area (she gets lost in the driveway). I have seen the ones installed in new vehicles and don't have 1500-1800 bucks to spend. Will a hand held work for driving? Are they user friendly, i.e., type in an address and get directions to destination. Any particular makes/models/software add-ons, etc. Budget is in the $250 range. Any advice is appreciated

Cheers

Wannafindem, sorry about the little play on your monicor but I just had to because of your topic. I bought a Magellan Map unit last Saturday. It is a hand held unit that you can add a street mapping system to for about $85. The unit itself sells for 199.99 at all the stores. I called Cabela's and they were the same price. So, I went to Sportsman Marine and bought it off the shelf. Anyway get one with the mapping system and you can add the streets package later if you want. This one was used Sunday and in the fog, I found a buoy I had marked out of Depot Bay. Glad I had it and did not wait on the shipping.

This unit is a SporTrak Map unit and it will track your movement from anywhere you go. I have used it going to the store and it you can backtrack with it by following the dotted line it leaves as your tracks. Hunting it will do the same thing. Mark your camp site and then take off. You can always see the camp site and figure out how to get back there by following the tracks.

Also look into the Garmion Series. They are inexpensive and very re-liable. Can't beat their Customer service.

I carry 3 GPSs on the BLACK ROCKET. A Raymarine SEATALK,(main), Garmin GPS45, and a GARMIN E-trex
(2 back ups)

Capt Kujo, if them Garmens are so darn good, why do you have to have three of 'em????????????
Most of them come with a battery compartment and you can take out the old and add new batteries once the first set is drained. That sure will cut down on your GPS purchases.

I wanna go out with you one of these days but work for a living and cannot get out during the week. I will keep watching and will someday hook up with ya for a boat ride and then you can show me how to use that new Magellan I bought.

*Fish only bite wet hooks*

Keep those tuna in site and kock them out every trip. That's the stories I like to read.
