Don\'t overrun the Tuna out of Depoe Bay!!
Well, the Sea Jypzee comes through once again. I decided it was a beautiful day for a boat-ride so off I went out for a nice morning cruise with Jamie (my dog). Figured I'd hop out past the whistle bouy and toss in the Salmon gear....there were a few other boats around, the ocean was very nice and all was right with the world.
Shortly later, as I was sitting in the sunshine, the faint whisperings in the back of my head....Nancy...Nancyyyyy...Naaannnnnccccyyyyy.... soon I began having images of Tuna dancing on the deck, so I just HAD to pull the Salmon gear and go find those voices I was hearing....
West I turned the Sea Jypzee, and at about 5 miles offshore, I noticed the water was looking mighty blue, so in goes the tuna gear. I figured what the heck, lets see just how far offshore these fish really are.
Well, it wasn't long, I was just at the 8mile marker and boom, had a double hook-up on the short-in diver boards right in the prop wash. Boated both those fish, put the gear out and decided to go get one or two more.....wasn't more than about 5 minutes when the loud roar of Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz comes ringing through my ears and brings me back to reality seeing my fishing pole screaming line off...managed to boat that fish with no problem and started thinking to myself...hmmmm here I am about 9 miles offshore, 3 tuna in the boat, no ice and all these fish to take care of...so figured I'd start heading for home. Kicked the boat into gear, when the short center handline went off before I even moved...boated that fish, and started off again...managed to make the turn towards shore when that all too familiar sound of ZZZZzzzzzzzzz goes ringing through my ears, and another fish on the pole.
Once I got that fish into the boat, I pulled all the gear back in and called it good.
Final count, 5 Albies, average 18-22lbs. Never broke 9.5 miles offshore straight out from Depoe Bay. Spent more time to loin them all out than it did to catch them!
Tuna for dinner tonight.

I see TUNA!, they are everywhere!
Great report, Sea Jypzee. I doubt if the close in fish will survive the NW blow we are in for this week.
We got one at 18 miles out on the way in last Saturday. The blue water was still there 11 miles out.

In the future, please refrain from posts like this on the board.
These types of posts tend to take year's off of us poor saps who read them at work.
Your compliance with this request will be appreciated.
Only 9.5 miles out and my boat is in the shop for a month ! Wouldn'tyaknowit?!?!?!

You know- that joke/rumor about the guide (wasn't that Marty Peterson?) catching the Albi in t-bay last year (after he stopped at the commercial seller) just might not be a joke this year!
PS- I ran across somebody who tried to tell me that story was real about a month ago. Just had to pop his bubble.

You're killin' me Sea Jypzee!!!!!!!!!!!
Here's how my day goes:
Wake up 4:45 am with sore back from being rear ended on I-5 Sunday.
Proceed to dig, trowel, pick with dentist's tools, etc, etc all while hunched over in the blazing sun 'til 3:30
Only to drive home and read this crapola!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well la-di-da!!
Now that you've tortured all us po' workin' folk with your stories of being overwhelmed with albacore, what are ya gonna do for an encore--tear the wings off butterflies? Steal candy from small children? Maybe just kick your dog huh?
Somehow, someway, I'll get even with ya for this!!!! Just you wait sister!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Don\'t overrun the Tuna out of Depoe Bay!!
I must apologize for posting the above report in the middle of the day at the beginning of the week.
As restitution, I will stay in port the rest of this week at least till friday.
Pilar ya, I'm hoping that the wind won't last long. Have some friends coming down for a trip out Saturday and would love it if they're within 10 miles. Saves a lot of gas, I'll tell ya.

Hey great report. The BLACK ROCKET will be running for sure on Thursday, but I might be running on Weds also. Are you running either of those days?

Hi Kujo - No plans as of this time for a mid-week run. Will be working all day wednesday, and have other things to handle most of the rest of the week. Sorry.

Re: Don\'t overrun the Tuna out of Depoe Bay!!
Great Nancy.........after catching a couple coho, releasing a couple and losing a couple in front of the lighthouse.... I proceeded NW about 10 miles...put out 2 hand-lines...first hit must have been a yellow fin  ......broke my 150lb leader..second hit must have been a bill-fish  .....broke my 150lb leader so I went and got some 250lb mono.......I'll try again next weekend.

Hi'ya Dean - Ouch, sorry to hear that you broke off both lines. That hurts!
I run 200lb mono leader on all my tuna lines. Are you using the rubber bungie as a buffer on the handlines? It helps to take up a lot of the shock when a fish hits hard on them.

Re: Don\'t overrun the Tuna out of Depoe Bay!!
Enough already! Im headed out of Depoe on Wed to chase salmon with a couple guys. We just may have to head a little farter west in pursuit of some long fins.
One question.......... If I was to go buy some tuna gear what are the 2 lures I need to buy and where can I get them in short order?????? I have 2 Ugly stick Tigers with Penn 321 GTIs on them loaded up with 80lb Tuff Line. Are these rods gonna handle those Tuna?

Re: Don\'t overrun the Tuna out of Depoe Bay!!
Paul, can I go????? No, I have to work so enjoy. Are you working on being a Saltydog sonny? Keep at it like this and you'll be there way before me.
There is another post today about Harry's in Newport. Also sounds like you better take something other than your fly rods adn 80LB tuff line. That should be plenty heave for a rod and reel combo. Keep me posted on how it goes and how far and all that.
Good fishing and I want you to stop and think about poor old me and Lucky Luke as we will be hard at work while you are bonking tuna in the head.
I have enough fuel to run out the 8 miles Nancy did. Not sure how I would get back though.

Re: Don\'t overrun the Tuna out of Depoe Bay!!
willierower - As for the tuna lures, I'd suggest going to Englands in Newport, Astoria, etc and get a "Tuna Clone" and a Cedar Plug. Both of these are pretty hot lures. Color choice depends on weather conditions the day you go out. Cloudy days you should use a darker color lure, in purple/black combination. Otherwise Mexican Flag is my 'standard' color of choice and tends to produce good results in most conditions.
As for the hardware - My general rule of thumb is a rod that is of halibut calibur will work for tuna, though I've seen salmon rods used as well. Your Penn 321GTI should be fine.

Thanks Nancy! I may hit Englunds today. Iguess it would be cool to have a few tuna lures on hand, "Just in case".
